Faculty honored for work, service

Shaking hands with the yet-to-be inaugurated MSU President Lou Anna Simon, 28 members of the MSU community received awards at the beginning of Friday's Founders' Day celebration. Distinguished Faculty Awards were granted to nine professors who received a certificate and $3,000 as recognition for their achievement.

The late Ray Charles' duet album "Genius Loves Company," recorded during the final months of his life, was the early leader at the Grammys in Los Angeles, with six wins on Sunday night. North Korea is upset, and the United States needs to do something to repair our relationship with the country, regardless of who is right. It's time for the United States to get down on its knees because, in the nuclear-weapon relationship game, you can't just make up later. With North Korea publicly boasting on Thursday that it has "nukes," and with peace talks nonexistent, we need to give up the stubborn, tough guy act and start playing to North Korea's interests.

Council to decide on 5 new DTN properties

A plan to construct five new apartment buildings on the 700 block of Burcham Drive will go before the East Lansing City Council next week. The project was debated and denied approval by the planning commission at its meeting last week. "The city of East Lansing is not in need of additional rental housing," Planning Commissioner Dale Springer said.

Marc Pinate, lead poet of the spoken-word group Grito Serpentino, said he wants to change society with his art. His California-based group is a NeoChicano, hip-hop flavored ensemble.

Wrestling team drops to No. 19 Hoosiers

The MSU wrestling team, injured and flu-stricken, lost to No. 19 Indiana, 33-4, on Saturday. Junior Darren McKnight won his 28th match of the season, giving the Spartans their only victory of the day. Sophomore Nick Simmons started off the meet by losing his first match of the season.

Library hosts medieval event including sword fights, crafts

By Gabrielle Russon Special For The State News Swords clashed and whips cracked during the "Dragon's Faire" at the East Lansing Public Library on Sunday afternoon. The medieval-themed event featured The Ring of Steel, a student performing troupe from the University of Michigan, who showcased their sword-fighting skills and medieval talents for about 200 people.

Powwow celebrates culture

Mallets began beating a precise cadence as the first high-pitched vocals soared into song. Slowly, to the drum's beat, a line of feather-adorned dancers began shuffling into the center of the arena. The dancers were performing in the 22nd annual "Pow-Wow of Love," which took place inside the Jenison Field House this weekend.

Making it last: Love advice from old pros

When he was overseas during World War II, Gib Hocking wrote passionate letters to his new wife, Judy. More than a half a century later, Judy Hocking still has the love notes. "It's kind of silly," Gib, 84, said of Judy keeping the letters. But Judy, 81, begs to differ. "No it's not - it's poetic and romantic," she said. The Okemos residents will celebrate their 61st anniversary in March and say they are as happy as ever. "We spent years and years making it work because we want it to work, and it's working - it's really working," Gib said.

MSU cruises past Badgers

Madison, Wis. - Balance was the key once again for the No. 9 MSU women's basketball team as the Spartans had four players in double figures, picking up their sixth win in a row over Wisconsin, 84-60. The Spartans (22-3 overall, 11-2 Big Ten) started to see their lead slip away early in the second half before junior guard Lindsay Bowen hit two 3-pointers in back-to-back trips down the floor to help pull away from the Badgers (10-12, 4-8). "We played a very good game against a solid Wisconsin team that never gave up," MSU head coach Joanne P.
