Simon asked to aid Lansing commission

MSU President Lou Anna Simon is working to increase MSU's presence locally and nationally. In response to budget cuts and a reduced population in schools, Lansing Mayor Tony Benavides appointed Simon and another co-chairperson to create the Special Commission on Schools and Neighborhoods. Benavides appointed Simon during his 2005 State of the City address Monday. The group will be composed of Lansing-area leaders and administrators from local schools.

Lansing man charged in death of prof

A 27-year-old Lansing Community College student was charged Wednesday with murder and first degree criminal sexual conduct in the death of LCC professor Carolyn Kronenberg. Kronenberg, 60, was found dead Sunday morning in LCC's Student and Personnel Service building in a classroom she was scheduled to teach in, 15 minutes before her class was to start. Claude McCollum, a Lansing resident, was an LCC student but not in any of Kronenberg's classes, a statement from the Ingham County Prosecutor's Office said. McCollum was arraigned Wednesday in Lansing's 54-A District Court and is being held in the Ingham County Jail without bond, jail officials said. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb.

Pill prohibition

Buying dietary supplements over the counter might get more complicated in the future. Earlier this month, the Institute of Medicine called for tougher regulations in regards to dietary supplements. Because supplements can be sold unless they are proven to be harmful, there is a possibility of an adverse effect unknown to the willing pill-taker. Advertisements for some of these supplements make it appear that taking them is safe and can, in some cases, work miracles.

MIDDAY UPDATE: City Council discusses MSU's proposed open-alcohol ban

As the debate over a proposed open-alcohol ban on campus rages, East Lansing officials are looking at its potential impact on the city. At a work session this week, East Lansing City Council members discussed different ways they could notify university officials of their opinion on the ban. "We are in favor of it because that would put the people on the university's property under the same laws and regulations when they come across Grand River (Avenue)," Councilmember Bill Sharp said. As it stands now, it's unlawful to walk in East Lansing while drinking from an open container, but it's legal to do so on campus.

WEB ONLY: Spartans bounce back in 71-58 win over Purdue

The No. 11 MSU women's basketball team had little trouble keeping their home record perfect as the Spartans made it 9-0 at home after beating Purdue, 71-58. The Spartans (17-3 overall, 6-2 Big Ten) got big contributions from all five of their starters, being led by senior center Kelli Roehrig, who had 20 points and junior forward Liz Shimek, who picked up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. "Kelli was very strong and solid on the inside tonight," MSU head coach Joanne P.

In response to the studies presented this week on the positive effects of the tailgating restrictions ("Tailgate trash" SN 1/25), I fear there may be negative effects that are not being studied.

Izzone members lack former verve

I have been a season ticket holder for MSU basketball for 27 years and have watched the evolution of the Izzone from a fanatic group of supporters to what it is now. When the Izzone first appeared, it was spontaneous, boisterous, exuberant, frenetic, LOUD and timely.

MSU cited among schools involved in recruitment bribery

The former high school football coach of a player MSU briefly recruited in 1999-2000 told a federal jury Tuesday that MSU was among five schools that offered him money to convince the recruit to come to its school. Lynn Lang, the former head coach at Trezevant High School in Memphis, Tenn., listed MSU along with Tennessee, Mississippi, Memphis and Arkansas as universities that offered money for Albert Means, but never paid.
