Greeks gather charitable donations

Several MSU fraternities and sororities will soon have some charitable landscaping done to their front yards. Within the next several weeks, at least 17 greek houses will have drop boxes for Volunteers of America, a Christian nonprofit community-service organization, installed on their properties.

Universities see increase in gifts

For the first time in three years, gifts to colleges and universities increased nationwide, a recent survey found - and MSU is following the national trend. During the 2004 fiscal year, gifts grew by 3.4 percent over the previous year, a survey by the Council for Aid to Education reported. "The economy's improving," said Ann Kaplan, director of the Voluntary Support of Education survey, a program in the council.

Historic women

Pioneers such as Susan B. Anthony might have paved the way for women's rights, but some women say total equality between men and women still hasn't been achieved. "As much progress as women have made, there's still a lot of work to be done," said Pat Lowrie, director of the Women's Resource Center. But there are efforts both nationally and at MSU and in the Lansing area to level the socioeconomic disparities between the sexes. Terry Barclay, president and CEO of the Detroit Women's Economic Club, said appointing Lou Anna K.

Stopping pills

Tiny and harmless looking, their simple nature causes some to callously regard prescription drugs as "just pills." Perhaps it is society's repeated use of them whenever a sneeze or sniffle appears that makes it seem as though they can't be abused.

ASMSU to sponsor pre-election party, give out free gifts

In an effort to inform students about ASMSU services and increase voter turnout in the March ASMSU elections, MSU's student government will host a pre-election pizza party for current representatives, potential candidates and the undergraduate student body. After last year's low voter turnout of about 5 percent, student government members decided further steps needed to be taken to get students to vote.

Iditarod hard for dogs, not mushers

As Tasha Stielstra said about the Iditarod, "there's not a lot of fun things about it" ("MSU alumnus, sled dog team prepare for second Iditarod run" SN 3/4). Sadly, this chilling observation applies much more to the team of dogs her husband Ed Stielstra will be taking to the Iditarod than it does to Ed himself. This 1,150-mile race through the rough terrain and subzero temperatures of Alaska is not at all fun for the dogs involved - their feet become bruised and bloodied, cut by ice and worn down from running.

Women's team deserved No. 1 seed

The Spartans claimed their first-ever No. 1 seeding, but many in the women's college basketball world do not agree with it. After the first three regions were released on Sunday, two candidates were left for the No.

Tulsa nabs Wojcik as coach

MSU head coach Tom Izzo is sending another apprentice out into the head coaching world. MSU associate head coach Doug Wojcik was hired by Tulsa on Monday to replace interim head coach Alvin Williamson, who led the Golden Hurricane to a 9-20 season after John Phillips resigned in December. Wojcik is the sixth coach under Izzo to nab a head coaching job. Wojcik will stick with MSU for the NCAA Tournament including Friday's opening game against Old Dominion, but has a short timetable to assemble his staff. Izzo joked at his weekly Monday press conference that the bad news was former MSU coach Jud Heathcote called to say he's interested in the position. "But I think I'm going for 10 years younger, and we're going to hire Gene Keady," Izzo said with a laugh. Izzo said when Wojcik came to MSU, there was an understanding it would be a short stop before he snagged a head coaching job but his contribution would help the Spartans and give Wojcik the extra experience he needed. Hiring Wojcik puts Tulsa back on track with past practices of hiring up-and-coming coaches including Tubby Smith, Bill Self and Buzz Peterson. Wojcik has spent two seasons at MSU, specializing in recruiting and scouting.

Affirmative action ignores core issues

I am writing in response to George Moyer's letter ("Affirmative action can have real value" SN 3/3). I can see the intent of affirmative action, and I agree that something must be done to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for self improvement through education and employment.

Izzo: Team needs big games from Hill, Torbert

Following a close loss to Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament on Friday, MSU head coach Tom Izzo said Sunday was a much better day. With calls from former coach Jud Heathcote and Earvin "Magic" Johnson and individual meetings with players, he said he felt better. "I've tried to come to grips with what this team is all about," Izzo said.

Gov. pushes plan to match workers with jobs this year

Gov. Jennifer Granholm wants to put 30,000 people to work by the end of the year with a plan to match unemployed workers with businesses and government agencies looking for employees. The Michigan Opportunity Partnership, which Granholm first introduced in her State of the State address last month, would combine private businesses and state government - up to 35,000 employers - to fill jobs.

Council to decide fate of E.L. rental properties

The debate about limiting rental housing will deepen today when a request to eliminate new rentals in the Bailey neighborhood goes before the East Lansing City Council. Under an ordinance passed last April, permanent residents have the power to petition the City Council to limit or completely restrict rentals in a designated area. Although this process, and the restrictions it dictates, is nothing new, some are concerned about how the council is using its power to add or remove properties from neighborhoods' rental restriction districts. "When the city created the overlay zones, the expressed intent was to create solidified single family neighborhoods," said Jeff Hudgins, co-owner of Hudgins Realty.
