Callie David was in her Thursday morning class when she felt the ground shake and heard a loud boom outside her University of London classroom. On her study abroad trip in London, the kinesiology junior unexpectedly witnessed a major event when the city fell victim to four terrorist bombings on July 7.

Tragedy watch

It's true. Hurricanes are now fiercer than before because of the Earth's climate change, and Americans can, and need to, help. A new study released last week in the journal "Science" showed evidence that the average number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes increased from 10 per year in the 1970s to 18 each year after 1990, with average tropical sea surface temperatures increasing as much as 1 degree Fahrenheit in that same time. This evidence correlates with the idea that global warming might be the cause of increased devastation from hurricanes. We've got the proof.

A Lansing woman who has run for several political offices was featured on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last week because of her gender experiences. Melissa Sue Robinson, who is transgender and was born male, said she was asked to take part in a special segment on identical twins who have sex changes by a producer of the show. "Somehow they found out about me," she said.

If anybody is under the impression that another white, male Supreme Court justice is something that must be avoided or compensated for, they are either racist or sexist. The purpose of the Supreme Court is to uphold the Constitution as the law of the land.

Traffic system aims to accelerate rescues

With the push of a button, Lansing-area emergency vehicles can clear traffic by switching a stoplight from red to green. The Lansing Regional Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption System Project, which will be finished next year, works by sending a signal from a strobe light mounted on an emergency vehicle to a sensor placed on a traffic light.

Smith displeased with mistakes in ND game

Despite entering Big Ten play ranked No. 17 with a perfect 3-0 record, MSU head coach John L. Smith isn't pleased with the mistakes his team made Saturday in a 44-41 overtime win at Notre Dame Stadium. "As we look at what we did, we're definitely thankful we got a win without a doubt, but we played by no means our best game," Smith said.

MSU conservatives urged to 'come out' at campus event

On Wednesday, several MSU conservative political groups will have a chance to make an announcement - they are proud of their political affiliation. The opportunity is part of the first-ever National Conservative Coming Out Day, an event aimed at raising awareness about the conservative presence on college campuses. At MSU, informational tables and a mock closet for participants to come out of will be set up at the Brody Complex and Bessey Hall, as well as a possible location on East campus, political science and pre-law senior Luke Pelican said. "The purpose of this day isn't to go after anyone or have an aggressive agenda," Pelican said.

Council hopefuls: Students must vote

Students should visit a new student-run Web site with information on East Lansing City Council candidates because students are residents of the city with the right and responsibility to vote, all four candidates have said. Judge strikes down abortion ban

Members of a pro-life group, MSU Students for Life, will work to voice protest to an abortion ban that was struck down last week in Michigan. "We are trying to educate our members so they can have more knowledgeable discussions with people who may not know that much about it," said Ken Curell, the president of Students for Life and international relations junior. The Legal Birth Definition Act, passed by the Michigan Legislature in June 2004, was declared unconstitutional by U.S.
