Racism toward Indians problem in East Lansing

I am an international student from India. I am from the state of Punjab where men usually wear turbans and have beards (Sikh religion). A few minutes ago, I was walking on Grand River Avenue with a couple of my friends, both of whom are mentors in West Circle, and both are also from the Indian subcontinent. As we were walking, this drunk student bumped into me, and I told him to take it easy.

Binge drinking killed privilege to tailgate

Every single time I've opened up The State News this week, I've read opinion articles complaining about the new tailgating policies and how upset students are about them. Frankly, I'm a little disappointed in this reaction but am certainly not surprised.

MICHIGAN

Dove hunting will be on Nov. ballot

Michigan's second dove hunting season has yet to take flight because of a ballot initiative to create a statewide ban on the sport, and groups who want to be able to shoot the birds are fighting back. Now, Michigan voters will decide the fates of the law and doves living in the state when they cast their ballots in the November 2006 general election. Because of the ballot initiative, the 2005 and 2006 seasons have been canceled. In June 2004, Gov.

Money matters

After cuts to higher education have plagued Michigan for years, the state Legislature made a bold move in support of public universities - unfortunately, it seems MSU got the short end of the stick. Although some schools - Saginaw Valley State University, Grand Valley State University and Oakland University - will receive funding increases of more than 7 percent from a $14 million share left in the House and Senate budgets, MSU will only receive a 0.4 percent increase. Students can't complain too much.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Officials hope to improve student football ticket system

After hearing too many complaints about the new student football ticket program, ASMSU representative Eric Hinojosa talked with Associate Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Mark Hollis last week about ways to improve the system - including an online program for students to transfer tickets to another student ID. "The students were angry that they lost the flexibility that they had with the voucher system," said Hinojosa, the Residence Halls Association representative for ASMSU's Academic Assembly.

Respect for the dead important in coverage

I was disappointed to read the editorial "1,000 words" (SN 9/9). While I fully believe in the right of journalists to report the truth, there are powerful reasons to prevent the publication of photos of the dead in the aftermath of the hurricane. Respect for the dead?

Magazine gives minorities a voice

During his free time this summer, Cyrus McNeal didn't thumb through magazines. He created one geared toward MSU minorities. "I sat down and thought about the ups and downs and what it would take," McNeal said.

Giving a little is not giving enough for rich

I find it sad that catharsis and a sticker can now be bought for $1 at any grocery store. Isn't it noble when a person buys a $30,000 car and, on the way home, donates a $1 for the Hurricane Katrina relief fund. Isn't it noble when that person drives home, parks his or her car outside his or her $300,000 home and sits on their massage chair, watching the news, knowing that he or she has done their part to help the people dying down south. Isn't it noble that 10 minutes away, people are just as desperate, just as in dire need and are dying? The stories of those 10 minutes down the road, the poor and disadvantaged, are mostly the same.

Officials to resume med school discussions

The future of MSU's College of Human Medicine will be discussed today more than 70 miles from its East Lansing campus, as officials involved in its proposed expansion meet for the first time since June 1. Acting Dean of Human Medicine Marsha Rappley will head to the Van Andel Institute in Grand Rapids this morning with MSU President Lou Anna K.

Bice critic wrong to denounce column

In response to Gabriel Cropsey's criticism of John Bice's "Columnist's writing promotes hatred" (SN 9/2), I found it ironic that half of the entire writing was quoted directly from the Bible.

Reading news, talking doesn't solve tragedy

This letter is in response to Paul Wilk's statement "Resident angered by tragedy response" (SN 9/9). Wilk stated that he was in the Union computer lab "frantically" searching for news about New Orleans flooding, and apparently he seems to feel that no one else cared.
