Will Ginn be a factor again in this year's matchup?

To say that last season's game against Ohio State didn't go the way MSU planned would be an understatement. After battling back from an early 17-0 deficit to take a 19-17 lead, the Spartans could not hang on, allowing two long touchdowns in the final 1:37 as the Buckeyes left East Lansing with a 32-19 victory. The biggest factor of that game was Ohio State freshman receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who ran for a 17-yard touchdown, took a punt back 60 yards for a score and then caught the winning 51-yard touchdown from quarterback Troy Smith in the final two minutes of play. MSU senior safety Eric Smith remembers last season's game vividly and hopes to learn from it. "We're going to use it for motivation, like we did against Michigan, but hopefully come out and play better than we did against Michigan," he said. Although Ginn has not been a factor this season for the Buckeyes, the Spartans still are concerned about his athletic ability. "I don't know if we have anybody as fast as him," Smith said.

Letter wrong about cartoon, cartoonist

In response to Rick Chasney's letter "SN cartoon wrong, abortion, war same" (SN 10/12), I want to fully support cartoonist Mike Ramsey for what I thought was a courageous and devastatingly honest piece of artwork. To Chasney, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Lack of self-esteem causes criticism

Regarding the article concerning women's dress, I am almost tempted to think that the writer wants to revert back to pre-women's rights movement attire just to appease her lack of self-confidence.

Hip-hop expressions

Slowly a blank, blue canvas on the side of Beggar's Banquet and Rick's American Café was transformed with aerosol paint on Thursday into an image of color and shapes to represent hip-hop and the scientific aspects behind it. Three artists worked side by side to create the 28 foot by 12 foot graffiti-style painting called "School of Hip Hop 101." The mural near Abbott Road was intended to show a variety of images including a DJ spinning records, a break-dancer, Albert Einstein and a city's urban landscape. Tobias France, one of the artists, said there are many elements of hip-hop involving formulas and equations, which people do not normally associate with the culture. "What we are trying to do is combine education with hip-hop," he said.

Paid getaway

It's nice of ASMSU, MSU's student government, to have students foot the bill for their "retreat" this weekend. The members must be preparing to be more like some officials in Congress.

MSU's offense might outlast Ohio State

Quarterback Both quarterbacks, MSU junior Drew Stanton and Ohio State's Troy Smith have scrambling abilities, but Stanton has proven to be the better passer. Smith, though, will take off more often than Stanton will if flushed out of the pocket, and he will probably have plenty of room to run.

Ringer the person remains a mystery

Running backs coach Ben Sirmans can only laugh when asked if he had any part in Javon Ringer's "coming out party" three weeks ago at Illinois, more specifically his zip downfield for 59 yards. "I wish I could say I had some magical drill but that's just him being him, fitting through a hole," Sirmans said.

ICE HOCKEY

MSU riding high into exhibitioner

MSU hockey head coach Rick Comley couldn't ask for a better start to the season. Last weekend, the Spartans went on the road and won the Lefty McFadden Invitational tournament in Dayton, Ohio with commanding victories against Wayne State and North Dakota, last year's national runner-up. It's the first time the Spartans have won their first two games since the 2001-02 season. "I always like to start two and zero," Comley said. The Spartans (2-0-0 overall) will hit the ice again at 7 p.m.
