MSU unbeaten in last four

The MSU men's soccer team (3-1-4 overall, 0-0-1 Big Ten) got back into the win column by defeating Bowling Green (2-6-1) 3-1 yesterday afternoon. Three minutes into the first half, freshman attacker Doug DeMartin got the Spartans on the board with assists going to senior midfielder Ryan McMahen and sophomore midfielder Ryan Dick. MSU head coach Joe Baum felt the Spartans were playing a little sluggish but were able to maintain the momentum at both ends of the field.

It's 2 evenly matched teams

Quarterback Some might find it rather amusing that Michigan quarterback Chad Henne is even being compared to junior quarterback Drew Stanton. Stanton has been almost flawless in the first four games for the Spartans, while Henne has struggled, notably against Notre Dame and Wisconsin - two big games for the Maize and Blue. It's obvious who has the advantage in this category, but unlike past quarterback matchups, this edge is massive. Advantage: MSU Running backs This is one of the categories that U-M normally has the edge in. Not this year. Michael Hart hasn't played since the Notre Dame game and even if he sees some snaps Saturday, how effective can he really be? The Spartans have freshman Javon Ringer, sophomore Jehuu Caulcrick and senior Jason Teague to hand the ball to.

Sophomore shining for Spartans

She was only in fifth grade when she was sitting in the stands with her father, cheering and watching a volleyball game, when her dad turned to her and said, "Hey, do you want to play this sport?" As sophomore outside hitter Katie Johnson said, that's how she began to develop her love for volleyball.

Village rally

When people are forced out of their homes, it's never a good thing. In fact, it's almost universally a bad thing.

Beating assault

Sexual assualt. It can be a gray area. These incidents happen more than they are reported. Last year, 13 cases were reported, but if you go out to parties on the weekend, 13 rapes could be just one night in East Lansing. This is a major issue for a university campus, because most of the victims are young students.

Don't be afraid of the monster anymore

I was talking with my friend who's a student at Michigan (and because of that affiliation, I use the word "friend" as loosely as possible) about what would happen if the Wolverines found themselves with a 2-3 record. "Wow," he said, obviously considering the possibility for the first time.

ICE HOCKEY

Icers picked 4th in media, coaches poll

The coaches and media around the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, or CCHA, are giving early hints that the MSU hockey team will be able to make up for the loss of All-American Jim Slater, who was the team's captain and leading scorer for the last two years. The Spartans were voted fourth in both CCHA preseason polls.

President has right to pick any justice

I'm writing in response to the many letters that have been sent in about the Supreme Court. In this rush to espouse various interests, I think some people may have forgotten how the system works. The people elect the president.
