Jake Ellsworth smokes when he goes to the bar, and while he doesn't believe everyone should have to partake in the habit, he doesn't see the proposed smoking ordinance as an answer. The interdisciplinary humanities senior sees the proposed ordinance, which would force bars to keep a section smoke-free for the entire night, as something that would infringe on his right to do so.
Project F.I.S.H. will be holding a workshop on campus for all MSU students to get informed and involved in sport fishing and aquatic resource education. The program will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Dressed up as a pirate, Kristin Dombrowski painted a sparkly moon and stars on the face of 11-year-old Morgan Newport, who was a half-angel and half-devil for Halloween. "(The children) are so happy when they come through, I just keep coming back," said Dombrowski, a telecommunication, information studies and media and studio art junior, who has participated in on-campus Halloween events for the past few years. MSU students organized trick-or-treating in Rather Hall on Monday evening as a way to provide safe, fun activities for local residents. Morgan's mom, East Lansing resident Jennifer Newport, said she has brought her children to trick-or-treat at residence halls for more than 12 years. The event is one way to improve relations between students and permanent East Lansing residents, Newport said. "It brings the community together," she said. The event was organized by the Rather Hall government, said Dan Blenman, Rather Hall government president and premedical freshman. "On Halloween, (students) could be going out and making destructive decisions, or they could stay in and have just as much or even more fun," Blenman said. Students love to interact with the community, Dombrowski said. "It shows that the students do care," she said.
The MSU women's soccer team will face Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament at 10:30 a.m.
Steve Tucker and Charlie Stuart nursed beers near the bar at the north end of Spartan Stadium's expansive club level Saturday morning. Only a few moments earlier, the two 1987 graduates had stepped off the elevator onto the 18,500-square-foot fourth floor of the new stadium addition. "Without fail, everyone I've brought up here is blown away," Tucker said.

It has been a season of ups-and-downs for the MSU hockey team and it has only played five games. The ups have been aplenty, with the team starting the season 3-1-1 and getting wins against top teams North Dakota and Cornell. "Our confidence is very good because we are getting such great efforts from all players," MSU assistant coach Tom Newton said.
Scott Riddle said he clearly remembers the exact spot where he was arrested last April. That night, Riddle said, he was handcuffed, put on his knees and pepper-sprayed by police near the Cedar Village apartment complex.
As the number of cars at the student-only tailgate decrease during the football season, some students criticize the newly implemented system. Only about 60 cars parked at the tailgate before Saturday's game against Indiana, out of 350 available spots. "It ruins school spirit," finance senior Jeremy Tollas said.
When I first heard NBA commissioner David Stern was enforcing a dress code, I was reminded of my high school principal, Mrs. Fisher.

Reading Ross Hammersley's letter, "Writer misinterprets; court case just, lawful" (SN 10/28), I was appalled to discover the depth of ignorance lurking in the mind of a third-year law student. Perhaps I shouldn't be, given the ideological inbreeding that dominates the legal community. Knowles correctly recognizes that in Romer v.
I am writing in response to John Bice's column, "Afterlife concept devalues earthly existence; celebrates death" (SN 10/21). I appreciate this column (and his others) for helping me look at my faith with his eyes.

A struggling and inconsistent Spartan defensive unit may have gotten the turnaround it was looking for in Saturday's 46-15 win over Indiana. Using a more aggressive strategy, the defense intercepted three passes for the first time since 2003, recovered a fumble, recorded two sacks, and made six tackles for losses, all while holding the Hoosier offense to 369 total yards.
It's scary to imagine where this country will be in 10 years. Considering the recent string of nominees coming out of the White House, the future seems rather uncertain. After the nomination of Harriet Miers failed, President Bush nominated Judge Samuel A.
