Ill intention

At least President George W. Bush is being proactive. Bush's announcement of a $7.1 billion plan to research, develop and stockpile vaccines to prepare the country for a possible flu pandemic is a preemptive approach to protecting the country. Many scientists believe a deadly flu outbreak is one of the greatest dangers for the United States and the world.

It takes a village

A shift in the type of residents at University Village apartments will affect more than just the MSU community, East Lansing residents said. Members of area neighborhoods said they are concerned about the possible effects redeveloping University Village will have on their communities. The MSU Board of Trustees approved a plan at its October meeting to redevelop the complex — which currently houses mostly graduate and international students and their families — into undergraduate student housing. "I'm a little concerned it'll flood the neighborhood with students," said John Narcy, associate professor of kinesiology. Narcy said he has lived in his Lilac Avenue home, south of University Village, for more than 20 years.

Smart spending

When elected officials spend money, those who elect them need to see results. ASMSU, MSU's undergraduate student government, plans to spend the $11,000 it recently allocated for updating office equipment, software, signs and insurance.

Still a close race heading to 10th week

Vince Young Junior quarterback Texas Last week: Completed 15-of-30 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Did not have his best game but impressively led the Longhorns out of a 19-point deficit, setting a school record for total offense. Reggie Bush Junior running back Southern Cal Last week: Rushed 17 times for 97 yards and had four receptions for 40 yards. Did not need to be a star as the Trojans rolled against Washington State, 55-13. Matt Leinart Senior quarterback Southern Cal Last week: Completed 24-of-34 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns. Sat out the last quarter as USC enjoyed a large lead. DARK HORSE Brady Quinn Junior quarterback Notre Dame Last game: Completed 32-of-41 passes for 467 yards and six touchdowns. Is a little under the radar compared to other big-name quarterbacks but is third in total offense in the nation, eighth in passing efficiency.

Iraqi consititution isn't end to Iraq war

I sincerely wish that passing this Iraqi constitution will do everything President George W. Bush claims it will. I would love nothing more than to be proved completely wrong on every assumption that has led me for the past two years to look at my newspaper every day and think to myself: "I told you so." I'm willing to give up my pride and my frustration with this administration just to see something that resembles peace happen there. I'd also like to win the lottery. I'm wary, to say the least, because Bush and his supporters have a kind of twisted optimism bordering on willful ignorance that is extremely disturbing.

RHA survey seeks input on smoking

Student responses could lead to discussions in changing housing options in the residence halls because of an online smoking survey. The Residence Halls Association, or RHA, wants students, along with faculty and staff, to take part in the survey which focuses on smoking in the residence halls. "It's really hard to gauge, without a broad-based survey like this, what students want," said Tom Wolf, director of technology for RHA.

Supplies ranging from voting booths to duct tape have been set aside and simply need to be picked up by delivery trucks and taken to the city's 17 polling locations, East Lansing City Clerk Sharon Reid said. Legacy lives on

Detroit — When Rosa Parks returned to her adopted hometown of Detroit for the last time, she didn't receive the sober welcome most people expect at a funeral. Between the clapping and hallelujahs that echoed throughout the sanctuary, the ceremony was more a rally than a solemn farewell.

Too late

The Democrats finally got the nerve to try to get answers about the war in Iraq. It's about time, but it's too late. As a testament to the country's division, Democratic senators invoked a rarely used parliamentary procedure on Tuesday to effectively shut down the Senate in an attempt to complete an investigation into the cause of war. It's part of an ongoing battle between Democrats and Republicans.

Students shouldn't pay for overtime

I am appalled by the "restitution" being charged to students illustrated in the "Students upset with $1,733 fine" (SN 10/28). Why should those students pay for the overtime of the overzealous police that tear gassed innocent bystanders? I do believe the guilty parties should foot the bill for all damage done, but having to pay for the cops that a vast majority of us agree acted in a heinous manner is ridiculous. What are the consequences for the cops that provoked the students and made unnecessary arrests?

Big joke

Nobody did anything. A crowd of 3,000 people gathered in the streets and were met by police with tear gas and pepper spray.
