MSU loses in tourney, NCAA bid in jeopardy

The MSU men's soccer team wasn't able to defend its Big Ten championship from last season as it lost to Penn State 2-0 in the semifinals of this year's Big Ten Tournament on Friday. Penn State, which went undefeated in conference play, took the lead midway through the first period, then added another goal in the 89th minute to ice the game. The Nittany Lions were the eventual tournament champions. The Spartans (8-6-5) will find out if their season is over or not today when the NCAA Tournament field is selected.

Changes proposed for condom labels

In an effort to better educate consumers, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wants condom labels to warn that they are not effective in preventing all types of STDs — especially those transferred by skin-on-skin contact. If the aim of this change is to provide better information for condom users, rather than scare people, Olin Health Center Health Coordinator Dennis Martell said he thinks it is a good idea. "Any time you can give knowledge to anyone using contraceptives, it helps them make better decisions," he said.

Disillusion, deficit plague auto industry

It's been nearly a month since Nick Potocki heard news that automotive giant Delphi Corp. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, capping a year of automotive sector cuts, losses and downsizing in Michigan. He's read newspaper reports on the financial troubles speckled throughout the struggling sector — affecting auto suppliers and General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler alike. For the mechanical engineering senior, the situation isn't encouraging. Automotive jobs are making a natural evolution and shifting to other sectors, high-end engineering and consulting firms, said Phil Gardner, director of research for the Collegiate Employment Research Institute. Collins & Aikman Corp., an automotive supplier with $3.9 billion in sales last year, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May.

Golden Gophers stomp Spartans

Minneapolis, Minn. — With their heads down and expressions of frustration clearly evident, the Spartans slowly trotted off the Metrodome field Saturday following a one-sided, 41-18 loss to Minnesota. Myths, actual rape experience different

I just have one question for Matt Cook regarding his letter "Clothes contribute to reasons to rape" (SN 10/27): When I was raped, I was wearing a green sweater — not at all low cut — and jeans.

Spartans out of tune in tune-ups

The MSU men's basketball team was far from impressive during its victory over Northern Michigan in an exhibition game on Saturday night. The Spartans defeated the Wildcats, 77-58, but committed 26 turnovers, including 15 in the first half. MSU head coach Tom Izzo said he was upset with the team's failure to protect the basketball, but attributed some of the sloppiness to the different combinations of lineups he used throughout the exhibition.

Commission makes final recommendations

Because no police officers were disciplined after the April 2-3 disturbances, all disturbance-related charges against students should be dropped and the fines returned, one independent commission member contends. University physician Beth Alexander wrote the personal statement to go along with the final recommendations of the commission, which was created to review the events of April 2-3 and allegations that police used too much force.
