Linguist studies profiling, misconceptions

Linguists like Dennis Preston do more than speak a variety of languages. "People also think that we are the language police and we patrol around making people speak correctly, but we are concerned with what people actually do, not what some think they should do," Preston said. This MSU professor's research focuses on sociolinguistics — the study of linguistic behavior as influenced by social and cultural factors.

MICHIGAN

Bill could revise gun laws

While deer hunters across the state gather their guns for opening day, legislation in the state House could make it easier for people to transport firearms in their vehicles. According to Michigan law, it is illegal to transport a firearm unless the owner has a hunting license, is traveling to or from a firing range or has a concealed weapons permit. The legislation would amend the state law to allow people who own firearms to transport them in the trunk of a vehicle, while unloaded, without a hunting license or a concealed weapons permit.

Delayed

The U.S. military was desperate for information after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Our government sought anyone with any information on potential terrorists. While the goals of the government to stop terrorism might have been noble, it exploited the desperate condition of war-ravaged nations in the Middle East.

Ramsey, protestors have free speech

The State News was flooded today with angry readers reacting to the Mike Ramsey cartoon (SN 11/11) on Veterans Day — the comic I am sure most State News readers are familiar with. Members of the community were also given an opportunity to view the strip along with a slew of propaganda if they happened to walk by The State News offices on Nov.

Record hasn't hurt recruiting

After starting the season 4-0, many thought recruiting would become easy for MSU head coach John L. Smith. Since then, though, the team has fallen to 5-5 overall and the opposite is being said for the Spartans recruiting efforts. But has it really become harder? "It hasn't," Smith said.

Expert: Running outside this winter won't hurt lungs

Dear Dr. D., Is it true that it's bad for your lungs to run during winter? Thanks, Chilly Dear Chilly, Well, as a Yooper who hails from the Porcupine Mountain area of the UP, I can honestly say that the only problem with running in the winter is making sure that if you slip, you don't fall on your "pasty" (Yooper humor). Thanks for your question.

Dropped passes, missed tackles still factors

Minneapolis, Minn. — Old demons continue to haunt MSU. Once again, drops by MSU's receivers and poor tackling by the MSU defense contributed heavily to the team's 41-18 loss to Minnesota on Saturday. Sophomore wide receiver Terry Love dropped the ball on two consecutive plays — one a deep bomb that would've put MSU inside the red zone, the next, a bubble screen. "The drops today were a nightmare," Love said.
