Coalition proposes more K-16 funding

A proposal to give school districts, community colleges and universities annual funding that keeps pace with inflation could appear on the November ballot. The K-16 Coalition for Michigan's Future, a collection of state educational advocacy groups, had 279,429 signatures certified by Michigan's Board of State Canvassers on Monday.

'Hardworking' guard to transfer to Missouri

Sophomore guard Maggie Dwyer is transferring to Missouri State after 60 games and nine starts with the women's basketball team. She totaled 117 points, 138 rebounds and 34 assists in her two-year career at MSU. MSU Assistant Sports Information Director Benjamin Phlegar said Dwyer declined to comment on the decision. Suspect to undergo testing, trial delayed

Court proceedings for Michael Lee Castillo — charged with drunken driving and kidnapping MSU student Amanda Lynn Brandel — will be postponed to determine whether he is competent to stand trial. Castillo, a 32-year-old Lansing Community College East student, will undergo psychiatric testing June 15 to determine his competency and his state of mind when an East Lansing police stopped him on Jan.

Project promotes recycling

East Lansing residents discarded bicycles and loaded scrapped lumber into containers Saturday in an effort to make the city more environmentally friendly. Volunteers at the 12th annual Project Pride spent the day collecting everything from scrap metal to cardboard boxes at Abbott Center, 1400-1500 Abbott Road.

University admissions site to add interactivity

Prospective students and their parents will soon be able to check out faculty and student profiles, video clips and interactive quizzes to get a better feel for MSU courtesy of a new Web site. The Office of Admissions and Scholarships plans to launch an updated version of its site in early July, said Pam Horne, Director of Admissions. "We still find that prospective students want to access quick facts and information," Horne said.

Cook-off heats up city

Lansing — The riverfront buzzed with energy Friday night as the Lansing Board of Water and Light held its annual Chili Cook-Off. The cook-off, now in its 11th year, hosted 39 booths, with 1,500 gallons of chili served, said John Strickler, spokesman for the Lansing Board of Water and Light. Greeted by a warm and sunny day, visitors tasted chili, salsa and other foods at booths that wound along the downtown River Trail between Michigan Avenue and Shiawassee Street.

Something beautiful happened this weekend. Rare photography spawned by crisp camera angles hung delicately on walls, luscious tapestries created in wondrous colors ravished white space and beautiful crystals shimmered elegantly through sparkling sunlight.

Teddy bear fix-up

A green cast covered Barry's right leg Saturday afternoon. The teddy bear also wore protective plastic sunglasses for her lazy eye and a colorful Band-Aid covered one of her wounds. Sarai Garcia's stuffed animal went through a lot at the MSU/Mid-Michigan Children's Initiative, or MSU/MMCI's, Second Annual Teddy Bear Picnic, which took place off of Service Road, across from the Clinical Center. "She had a broken leg," the 8-year-old Lansing resident said.
