Government should stay out of marriage, let religion handle it

Growing up on Barbie and Ken, Uncle Jesse and Rebecca, Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski, it was thought and, thus, expected that everyone should grow up living the "normal" lifestyle — heterosexuality. Although I wasn't brought up to dislike the differences that humankind reflects, I tend to inquire about why or how our society can be so insecure with itself that it uses something as minuscule as sexuality as a scapegoat for the harnessed problems of our era. My biggest concern is the fact that so many of our politicians who hold seats in our government are allowing their religion to justify the way they decide on certain legislation.

Brown leaves MSU to join NBA draft

Shannon Brown is leaving the Spartans. Brown had been looking for a team that would commit to making him a first-round selection, like other players who enter the NBA draft without hiring an agent. Brown said Thursday that no team would make that guarantee, but positive feedback after workouts with several teams helped him decide to keep his name in the draft and skip his senior season at MSU. "There will be no regrets because it's my decision," he said in a conference call from the Chicago area.

No hope of compromise in immigration reform

On immigration, the House and Senate have passed two very different bills. In fact, they're so different, the situation evokes one of those science-fiction movies, in which scientists combine matter from one dimension with matter from another. Usually, the result on film is a big explosion.

Swedish design meets Michigan

Canton, Mich. — Swedish tradition replaced a ribbon-cutting ceremony yesterday as a log was sawed in half to signify the opening of Ikea, the Swedish furniture company. The line to enter Ikea, 41640 Ford Road, wrapped around the 311,000-square foot building Wednesday morning, but it moved fast as people rushed through the doors when the store opened at 9 a.m. Ikea employees stood at the entrance handing the first 5,000 customers manila envelopes with vouchers inside, containing anything from a "buy one get one free" hot dog to a $250 gift card. The Canton store is the 28th Ikea to open in the United States and 236th in the world.

Buffali to play at Magdalena's

If you think The Buffali is a ridiculous band name, just be glad members Clare Fehsenfeld and Andrew Yonda did not go with Fehsenfeld's original name. "Originally, I thought it would be funny to name the band 'Standy Handby and the Boring Buffali,' and then Andrew said that that was really stupid," Fehsenfeld said in a phone interview Tuesday. Fehsenfeld and Yonda will be bringing their self-described "bombastic acoustic indie pop" to town on Friday at Magdalena's Tea House, 2006 E.

FDA should focus on fatty foods not portion sizes

How about instead of making portion sizes at fast food and other restaurants smaller, the FDA should start finding ways to make the good and healthy foods cheaper and the fatty and unhealthy foods more expensive. I am sick of going shopping and seeing that a bag of chips or dessert Snack Packs are cheaper than a pound of apples or a loaf of whole-wheat bread.
