With JazzFest situated in Lansing's Old Town at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Turner Street, ongoing construction on the Grand River bridge could make for some difficult festival-going. Nine people charged in connection with a mid-March MSU Federal Credit Union scam pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge as part of a plea bargain on Tuesday in district court. The defendants also testified in court that they or a third party knowingly used the defendants' account information for the purpose of withdrawing more than what was in their accounts. One of the defendants did not appear at the court proceeding's scheduled time. Those charged in connection with the scam were approached by people who asked for their ATM cards and personal identification numbers, or PINs, said Catherine Lynch, vice president of member services for the credit union, in a May 17 State News article. The scam involves using ATM cards or PINs that are sold or given in exchange for money deposited into accounts.
With high temperatures blazing through Michigan, the Lansing Board of Water and Light has asked its customers to try to conserve the amount of electricity they use to prevent a possible blackout. Temperatures in the upper 90s have lead to high energy use across the state from the increased use of air conditioners and fans, and Mark Nixon, the communications director of the Board of Water and Light said the company could break the record for the amount of megawatts produced. "When something like this happens, it is hard to say whether it is a good thing or bad thing," Nixon said.
Another MSU basketball player has been named to a foreign tour team. Sophomore guard Travis Walton has earned a spot with the Big Ten Men's Basketball Foreign Tour Team. Walton will travel with the team Aug.

So, everyone should just "get over" the 2003 riots, as was suggested in the title of the editorial "Get over 2003, prevent future riots," (SN 7/31), and not use the destruction caused to people and property for future precautions and decision making by not only the police, but also by students and East Lansing residents? How unwise would it be if anyone actually took that advice and let people — like Kyle Thomas Manning — who are supposedly not a threat anymore, go home and live their normal lives, while the local suspects being charged with the same thing have to own up to the choices they made with Manning three years ago. What if we just "got over" everything?
With the help of visiting Boy Scouts, MSU police and the East Lansing Fire Department are making it their mission to "be prepared." More than 250 scouts volunteered Tuesday to participate in organized evacuations of the fourth floor of the Spartan Stadium's tower.
In regards to Liz Herrington's recent letter, "Abortion column even offends pro-choicers," (SN 7/31), I would like to point out that reasoning for abortion is personal.
The reorganization of the MSU track and field program came to an end July 31 with the announcement of three new staff members. Track and field director Walt Drenth welcomed to the program Chris Bostwick as associate coach of jumps Kathy Rounds as assistant coach of sprints/hurdles and Randy Gillon as assistant coach of sprints/mulit-events. "Randy, Kathy and Chris are true students of the sport and are exceptional teachers who will continue to expand their base of coaching knowledge," Drenth said in a press release. Rounds previously coached the Spartan men's cross country and sprint teams, while Bostwick was an assistant coach at the University of Miami (Ohio), and Gillon was a director at Prime Function Strength and Rehabilitation Training Systems in Toronto.
