Officials propose new music college

The addition of a new academic college could be music to the ears of some MSU students and officials. Academic Assembly received a proposal from university officials on Tuesday to support the School of Music's move to becoming a college.

Big Ten has been rude awakening for MSU

After winning a majority of its nonconference games, the MSU volleyball team finds itself struggling heading into its weekend matches. The Spartans have lost three of their four Big Ten matches, giving them a 1-3 record in the conference. "I think we have had great opportunities to win every game," head coach Cathy George said.

Muhammad Ali endorses Granholm, research

Gov. Jennifer Granholm just got a knockout endorsement. Boxing legend Muhammad Ali and his wife announced Wednesday their support for Granholm's re-election and her work to reduce restrictions on stem cell research in Michigan. Ali and his wife, Lonnie, also signed the governor's petition calling legislators to advance embryonic research in Michigan. Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1982 and has since advocated for stem cell research, which might lead to a cure for the disease. "We are joining Gov.

MSU, Illinois fined $10K for flag-planting fight

The Big Ten fined Illinois and MSU $10,000 each on Wednesday for a scuffle between players following the Spartans' 23-20 loss to the Fighting Illini on Saturday. After the game ended, Illinois players attempted to plant a flag at midfield in Spartan Stadium.

YAF group glorifies same activities as fascists

The State News reported that an organization called Young Americans for Freedom, or YAF, has sought endorsement from the campus Republican organization for "Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day" in the story "MSU, U-M plan 'Catch an Illegal Immigrant Day,'" (SN 9/21). There would be a cash prize to zealous students who uncover the one or more students with an "illegal immigrant" sign.

Groups to celebrate 'Indigenous Peoples'

Most calendars identify Oct. 9 as Columbus Day. However, some students on campus refer to the day as Indigenous Peoples Day instead. "We call it Indigenous People's Day because in calling it Columbus Day, you're celebrating the mass murder of people," said Ashley Harding, cultural programmer for the North American Indigenous Student Organization, or NAISO.
