House hesitant to pass new bills until '07

Michigan legislators have only three weeks of scheduled sessions left before January brings a changing of the guard in the Senate and House, and Republicans say they don't have plans to approve any last-minute bills before they lose a majority in the House. Although Michigan politicians are hoping to pass a replacement for the Single Business Tax, health insurance reform and a $4,000 merit scholarship, analysts doubt such legislation will pass in time before Democrats assume control of the House. There's also doubt Republicans will spend time on bills likely to be vetoed by Democratic Gov.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Students question Board of Trustee member's actions

More than 125 students erupted in outrage when MSU Trustee Joel Ferguson answered his cell phone Friday while a student was expressing concern to the board about Michigan's newly passed affirmative action ban. "(Answering the phone) just shows the lack of respect that the administration shows toward their students," said Claudia Gonzalez, an interdisciplinary studies in social science and community relations senior. Students with black cloth covering their mouths protested at the MSU Board of Trustees meeting, holding signs that read "Listen to the Students!" and "Simon Says ... NOTHING", in regard to Proposal 2. On Tuesday, Michigan voters passed the proposal, which bans the use of race and gender preferences in admissions and government hiring and contracting. Students were allotted 15 minutes for discussion with the trustees.

New minimum wage barely noticed in E.L.

Last month brought Michigan's first minimum wage increase in nine years and, so far, East Lansing businesses haven't noticed an impact. "Generally, in this area, all the jobs are already above minimum wage," said Phil Gardner, director of MSU's Collegiate Employment Research Institute. Previously, the minimum wage rested at $5.15 per hour, but rose to $6.95 in October.

Editorial wrong, global warming not scientific fact

I'd like to address a statement made in the "Reduce effects of global warming now" editorial (SN 11/1). The statement in the third column of the editorial said, "Global warming is scientific fact and needs to be addressed immediately." This statement is false and almost blatantly so.

Dems must not waste opportunity for change

A funny thing happened Nov. 7 — the Democrats won. Sure, pundits from coast to coast were predicting a strong Democratic win in the congressional elections, but those predictions usually were peppered with guarded optimism over the outcome.
