Writer does not persuade readers with mockery

Brand new year, same old John Bice. In his taxingly redundant column, "Rising numbers of nonbelievers increase popularity of atheism" (SN 1/16), Bice continues his tirade against the illogical evils of organized religion — in particular, traditional Christianity — in a vain, attempt to get readers to buy into his rhetoric.

E.L. heroes rewarded

One person pulled an elderly man from a burning vehicle, another saved his girlfriend from the clutches of an attacker and another fought off a violent rapist. These former or current MSU students were honored alongside police officers Thursday night at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbott Road, during the East Lansing Police Department's annual awards ceremony. Josh Burda, a physiology senior, was honored for pulling a man in his 70s from a car that exploded no more than 10 seconds after saving him, he said. Dahlman out with foot injury

When freshman forward Raymar Morgan got back to his Wonders Hall dorm room Tuesday night, he noticed an abnormally low energy level in his roommate, freshman guard Isaiah Dahlman. "Isaiah's usually happy," Morgan said, "so I could tell something was wrong." The cause for Dahlman's dismay: An injured right foot, suffered when he made a cut in practice Monday, that will keep him out of action for at least a week and possibly more. "He's got some swelling and inflammation through the foot," MSU's director of sports medicine Jeff Kovan said.

The Lakers (13-8-3 overall, 7-6-3 CCHA) come into East Lansing with a chance to tie the Spartans (14-8-1, 10-6-1) in conference standings if they get a weekend sweep, prompting a competitive weekend of play.
