Scrapbooking hobby becomes industry

Nicole Fleming wanted to organize her high school pictures into a keepsake she could display at her graduation party. When the packaging junior decided to take all of her photos and fill the pages of a blank book, a new hobby was born — scrapbooking. Fleming didn't waste any time when it came to designing and creating her first book.

Shiite-Sunni tensions elevated in U.S.

It seems the rift that exists between Sunnis and Shiites is not confined to Iraq. The disagreement and fight has spilled over into the United States. Recently, there has been an uptick in discord domestically between the two groups, with many of the recent encounters occurring in Dearborn, where 30 percent of the city's less than 100,000 people are Arabic, according to the U.S.

MSU professors weigh in on best and worst of Super Bowl XLI's multimillion-dollar ads

The TV was on. The chips and dip were in abundance. People were everywhere. It was your basic Super Bowl party atmosphere. Only no one was watching the game. For 16 MSU advertising, public relations and retailing faculty members, the commercials trumped the touchdowns. It was the 10th consecutive year the group has been gathering at advertising Professor Robert Kolt's Haslett home to rate the Super Bowl's best and worst commercials.

Israel could not promise protection for civilians

I am appalled by the audacity your paper has to print such a scathing editorial of Israel, "Israeli use of cluster bombs unjust" (SN 1/29). Israel is a country that puts human rights higher than any other country that has been attacked over a sovereign border.

Spartans show offensive potential in wins

The MSU's women's basketball team might just be finding an offensive rhythm. The evidence: MSU has recorded two of its highest point totals of the season the last two games, and in Sunday's 80-70 win over Illinois, four Spartans scored in double figures, led by a season-high 22 points from sophomore guard Mia Johnson. Add to that a season-high 19 points from sophomore forward Aisha Jefferson and 14 from freshman center Allyssa DeHaan, and MSU could have the makings of a lethal inside-out combination. DeHaan, for the most part, had her way with the Fighting Illini, shooting 7-of-8 from the field with seven rebounds in a nice bounce-back game. "If (DeHaan's) really focused, you can expect some special things," MSU head coach Joanne P.

Mich. bans same-sex health care benefits

With Friday's state court decision banning same-sex health care benefits, some MSU employees will have to find new ways to support their partners. Kitty O'Neil, a research assistant for MSU's crop and soil sciences, said she used the health coverage benefits the university provided when her partner, Becky, was laid off for a few weeks. "My partner and I are pretty saddened by how it affects our family and how it's going to affect families all over Michigan," O'Neil said. Michigan voters approved a ban on gay marriages in 2004, which included same-sex domestic partner benefits, a three-panel judge said.

Hall of fame honors MSU female journalism staff

It was the 1974 football season, the first year women were allowed in the press box at Notre Dame stadium. Then-reporter Sue Carter was sent to cover the game against MSU for a small Lansing radio station. But she wasn't allowed into the locker room. "I had brought a male friend with me, and I gave him my tape recorder and a list of questions and sent him in," said Carter, now an MSU journalism professor. Women have made strides for equality in journalism since then. This year, four women — including Carter and Cheryl Pell, another School of Journalism faculty member — and one man will be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame. "Great progress has been made, but even greater progress is to come," Carter said.

Green Week offers chance for collaboration

By Julie Baker The State News For one MSU student and an MSU alumnus, the gloom and doom predictions of global warming offer more than bad news — they offer a challenge. The MSU Bio Diesel Project will be producing fuel using products commonly found in the kitchen during a demonstration at 7:30 p.m.

Spartans unbeaten in last 7 contests

As soon as the Spartans took the ice Friday in Omaha, it was clear they left their travel legs on the airplane. MSU (17-8-2 overall, 13-6-2 CCHA) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in Friday's game against Nebraska-Omaha and ended up winning, 5-1, in a penalty-free game.

BASKETBALL

Men's team lets game get away

You wouldn't think a rebound with 13 minutes left to play would ever be the deciding factor in a basketball game, but it's the one that probably rendered MSU head coach Tom Izzo an insomniac most of Saturday night. Here's what happened: MSU, despite playing the first half with the harmony of a drunk orchestra, had trimmed an eight-point Ohio State lead to one.

Our generation brings public debate to Internet

I am disappointed in Pete Nichols' portrayal of Generation Y in "Our generation needs to wise up, combat country's deterioration," (SN 1/29). Our generation is the creator of Facebook.com and the supporter of MySpace.com, Google.com and YouTube.com. Generation Y invented instant messaging and blogging, propelled alternative online news sources into mainstream media and revolutionized consumer business models.
