Flaws with science

Atheism is quickly joining mainstream American society. If a majority of the population doesn't accept atheism, it can't be for lack of exposure.

Sideshow banners displayed at MSU

A three-legged man playing soccer is on display at Kresge Art Museum as a part of a nontraditional exhibit of circus sideshow banners. The collection of 12 canvas banners depicts exotic attractions ranging from a man riding a bicycle upside down through the air, to an underweight man playing tennis. There was some concern with how the exhibit would be received, said Cari Wolfe, assistant education curator. "Initially, there was some apprehension to being sensitive to certain issues - the armless and legless boy, the woman who is very large, that sort of thing," Wolfe said.

Wage increase debated

Michigan's new $7.15 minimum wage will not be enough to cover workers' basic needs, according to a recently released report from the Michigan League for Human Services. The league, a nonprofit advocacy organization for low-income Michigan citizens, released the report stating that even with the wage increase, many will be forced to get help, such as food assistance and housing subsidies. "Low-wage workers have a really difficult time making ends meet in Michigan right now," said Sharon Parks, the league's vice president for policy.

DeVos should serve time for Quixtar scam at MSU

MSU shamed itself by hosting a pyramid scheme rally last weekend. Thousands shelled out cash they made at their day jobs to honor Quixtar, which is related to Dick DeVos' business, Amway. Let me tell you about this "amazing opportunity:" Quixtar's team of zombies tries to convince others they'll soon be millionaires by fabricating how much money they make, paying outlandish membership fees, buying motivational books and CDs, and buying overpriced items from quixtar.com. Relentless efforts to get others to join ruin families and friendships.

Making a splash

Screams were heard from the entrance of the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center as kids jumped off a diving board and swished through slides Friday. An inflatable pirate stood among blow-up palm trees as children participated in a treasure hunt, sidewalk chalk drawing contest and bean bag toss at the center's "The Pirates of East Lansing Family Aquatic Center" activity day. "In order to keep the facility a fun place to visit in the summer, we have to have fun events … that's also a way to thank the patrons who come out almost every day," said Jim Jennings, East Lansing's sports and athletics coordinator. The center, 6400 Abbott Road, which usually hosts crowds of 300 on a weekday and up to 600 on a Saturday or Sunday, had about 200 people attend the activities. "All the events are very, very dependent on the weather," said Lindsay Pierce, a manager at the center.

Benefits of faith

Readers have asked, repeatedly, that I acknowledge some good aspect of religious belief. Religion does offer some worthwhile benefits, of course, like a sense of community and incentive to be charitable, but such things can be obtained without abandoning reason.
