Graduate assistants inching closer to walkout

The Graduate Employees Union took one step closer to their proposed one-day walkout Sunday by approving a ballot sent to all members that could authorize the job action. If approved – and if a contract has not been reached before then – the walkout would take place at 6 a.m. Tuesday, with members present at nine picket lines placed strategically around campus.

FOOTBALL

See you in August

It wasn’t one wide receiver who stepped up in Saturday’s spring game — it was four. And that depth is important for a football team that lost eight touchdowns and 1,260 receiving yards when Devin Thomas declared for the NFL draft after last season. With Thomas watching from the sideline, the young receiving corps of sophomore Mark Dell, redshirt freshmen B.J. Cunningham and Chris D. Rucker and junior Blair White stole the show at MSU’s annual spring game.

The MSU Board of Trustees recently voted to raise room and board rates by 5.25 percent effective by the next academic year. Incoming and returning students can expect to see a price increase of $350, which means it will cost about $7,026 each year for a double room and an unlimited meal plan.

ASMSU’s Student Assembly was unable to approve its 2008-2009 budget despite spending more than seven hours meeting Thursday. Although the assembly named its Student Assembly chairperson, vice chairperson for external affairs and vice chairperson for internal affairs, members tabled the budget until its meeting Thursday.

Field of dreams

It took more than 100 years, but Old College Field is getting a face-lift. Since 1900, the home of MSU baseball, softball and men’s and women’s soccer has remained relatively untouched, causing it to fall behind the standards of NCAA facilities around the Big Ten and Midwest.
