Police brief 04/27/10

Staff in the College of Education said a man attempted to steal a computer as a fire alarm sounded Saturday, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The suspect allegedly came into the building during the alarm and attempted to steal a computer from the College of Education office.

NPHC Week acknowledges greeks, religion

On Monday, a panel discussion about the connection between the greek community and religion kicked off the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Spring NPHC Week — an annual event meant to end the semester and bring attention to the organization. The National Pan-Hellenic Council, or NPHC, is an umbrella organization that includes nine traditionally black fraternities and sororities.

MSU cheer club attends nationals

The MSU All-Girl competitive cheer club team finished first in the Big Ten and seventh in the nation at the 2010 Nationals competition in Daytona Beach, Fla. The program expanded this season and members attended various competitions nationwide.

If Lansing wants to become a hot destination for young professionals and recent graduates, then it needs to strive for more than a high “cool” factor. Jobs will be the ultimate deciding factor in attracting the newest generation of talented professionals to the area. Just being “cool” doesn’t pay the bills.

Lansing apartment fire displaces about 80; half affiliated with MSU

A Sunday night apartment fire at the Trappers Cove complex has displaced about 80 people and remains under investigation, the Lansing Fire Department said. Trappers Cove is located southeast of MSU at the intersection of Dunckel and Jolly roads. Alison Bono, a spokeswoman for the mid-Michigan chapter of the American Red Cross said about half of the displaced residents are affiliated with MSU.

From one family to another

On Sunday, Mohammed and Maj. David Howell departed from the U.S. on their way to Iraq. In the year since Howell brought the 13-year-old boy to Michigan for medical attention, Mohammed has become close with the East Lansing community, his family and the man who brought him here.

Athletes' take on new brand most important

Greg Jones, Kalin Lucas and Durrell Summers have opportunities to put a stamp on their senior seasons in 2010-11. They’ll be doing so with newly designed Nike threads — enhanced technology, a more resounding shade of green and new designs, numerals and typography — on their backs.

ASMSU Student Assembly elects leadership positions

In the last official ASMSU Student Assembly meeting of the year, the 47th session filled its top leadership position by electing Eric Branoff as chairperson for the coming year. Branoff, formerly the vice chairperson for external affairs, was elected Student Assembly chairperson over Chris Schotten on Thursday night. Schotten held the role of vice chairperson for internal affairs during the 46th session.

Police brief 04/26/10

A 21-year-old female MSU student said her wristlet was stolen April 18 after she left her dorm room unlocked, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. She said the student left the wristlet on her dresser in her Holmes Hall room. She left the room unattended with the door open while she went downstairs for an hour.

Beloved primate dies at local zoo

A 28-year-old female mandrill — likened to Rafiki in Disney’s “The Lion King” — named Gladys died Wednesday evening at Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo, 1301 S. Pennsylvania Ave. Gladys first arrived at the zoo in 1989 after she was born in Brownsville, Texas, in 1982.

When the Reo Elementary School Rockets come into class Monday, they’ll be writing about something new they see, something “exceptional” — it’s the word of the week. And considering the extent of renovations made by the MSU branch of the Student Michigan Education Association, or SMEA, on Saturday, there will be a wide variety of things from which to choose.

Sparty party hit by rain

Nearly 2,000 people crossed the threshold of Sparty’s Spring Party 2010 on Saturday at Demonstration Field to participate in giveaways and carnival-like fare. The annual event — now in its ninth year — was sponsored by MSU’s University Activities Board, or UAB, Student Alumni Foundation, or SAF, and ASMSU.

The candidate pool for the MSU Board of Trustees continues to grow after an MSU alumnus and local business owner announced his intention to seek one of two spots open during this year’s midterm elections.
