East Lansing parking ramp colors should remain unchanged

Most MSU students who have passed through East Lansing are aware of the Lot 10 Colorful Garage, on Division Street between East Grand River Avenue and Albert Street. It’s the ugly parking ramp … the colorful, ugly parking ramp. An East Lansing firm is circulating an exploratory petition to secure support for a plan to paint the ramp green and white. Robert Russell, the lead organizer of the movement, said the success of the project would be a way to bring the city and MSU closer together.

Dairy Store unveils new flavors

Peanut butter and jelly is one of three new flavors recently released at the dairy store in Anthony Hall. The other newcomers are turtle sundae — a butter chocolate swirl with chocolate-covered pecans — and Omer Tracks, which is malted ice cream with chopped M&M’s and chocolate-covered waffle cone pieces, named for the raccoon mascot from Odyssey of the Mind, which was hosted May 26-29 at MSU.

'Infinite Arms' fails to stand up to expectations

I’m more than a little thrown by the new Band Of Horses album “Infinite Arms.” I just don’t get it — and I really, really wanted to. The album is the third release from the indie rock group. They have built themselves a large following in a relatively short span of time, but despite the pedestal on which I had them before listening to the new album, I must say — I’m very rarely so wrong and disappointed at the same time.

Positive work of former MSU athletes outshines negative

Former MSU athletes tend to pop up in unflattering news stories all too often. However, as two former Spartans — Shannon Brown of the Los Angeles Lakers and Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks ­— are competing for championships at the highest level of their respective sports, now is the perfect time to focus on MSU’s former stars who now are winners on the court, field or ice and off of them.

Student sees spill up close

MSU zoology junior Ben Kamphuis was taking part on a research cruise in the Gulf of Mexico that had a change of plans following the explosion and sinking of a BP Amoco PLC oil rig. Kamphuis’ cruise, which was examining nitrogen levels on the Louisiana coast, deviated to take samples from the oil spill after receiving a last-minute grant from the National Science Foundation.

A 23-year-old female MSU student reported her wallet stolen May 24 from the Music Practice Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The student was practicing in the room and left for less than 10 minutes, and left the door to the room unlocked.

Bowling event raises funds for Mission for Mercy

Community members participated in a bowling fundraiser Saturday at Marvel Lanes, 2120 E. M-78 Highway in East Lansing. An estimated $400 was raised for the mission trip, entitled Mission for Mercy, sponsored by Healthcare Ministries. Mission for Mercy trip members will travel August 20-31 to the Republic of Cameroon, Africa to help provide health care for impoverished residents.

Virtuosi spring concert provides hope

The MSU Community Music School auditorium was filled Thursday night with classic melodies and the work of the Okemos and Spartan Virtuosi Strings violinists. The Spring Virtuosi Concert has been held after each semester for the past 30 years, and violin and viola instructor Susanne Garber, who has been teaching for 20 years, said it was a great opportunity for young students to learn the art of violin and viola.

A $65 ticket might be the least of some students’ troubles as area officers stepped up patrol this past weekend and plan to continue during the week ahead in multiple enforcement zones for Michigan’s “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which runs May 24 through Sunday.

MSU, MIT research alternative fuel

An MSU professor is a part of a team examining the practicality of an alternative liquid fuel that could eventually replace gasoline. The group is receiving $1.7 million from the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy to design a reactor to test a microorganism’s production of new fuels.

Breakfast event to benefit homeless

The annual Pancakes in the Park event hosted by the East Lansing Rotary Club will take place 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event brought in a record 1,500 people in 2009 in efforts to raise money for several nonprofit organizations, including Haven House, which is an organization that provides housing and support services for homeless families with children.

State Juneteenth holiday to be held

Michigan’s sixth annual celebration of Juneteenth will feature various festivities and entertainment June 17-19 in Lansing. Juneteenth, or June 19, recognizes the announcement of slavery’s abolition in Texas in 1865. The celebration in Michigan will begin at 11:30 a.m. June 17 at the Capitol Building with the annual State Holiday Legislative Luncheon Program.
