Higher education bill is a baseline for state budget

If for no other reason than showing interest in the future of Michigan, we are glad to see legislators voted to maintain funding at its current level for public state universities for fiscal year 2010-11. The 55-51 state House of Representatives vote amends the state Senate version that proposed a 3.1 percent decrease in funding.

MSU officials, former player weigh in on Izzo, Cavs

MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo has been contacted by the Cleveland Cavaliers regarding the organization’s head coach vacancy, newly introduced Cleveland general manager Chris Grant said at a press conference Tuesday. University officials and former player Charlie Bell said Tuesday they hope Izzo will stay in East Lansing.

MSU to replace dying trees at Demonstration Field

The treeline around Demonstration Field will undergo some changes next week, as several dying trees will be removed and replaced with a more disease-resistant species of tree, MSU officials said. Twenty-three new trees will be planted after MSU Landscape Services removes 11 dying Norway Maple trees.

Local theatre to premiere 50th anniversary show

Summer Circle Theatre will celebrate its 50th anniversary where it all began Wednesday, with a tribute performance of “Blithe Spirit,” the theatre’s first performance. Established in 1961, the theatre is a mix of East Lansing community members and MSU student actors working together to provide outdoor theater performances free of charge.

Two vehicles were involved in an accident last Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Village, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. A 29-year-old female MSU student backed her 1997 Honda Accord into a parked 2005 Freightliner van, which was being unloaded by a 29-year-old male from Lansing.

Lack of empathy might be due to lack of curiosity

An article published by USA Today reported a recent study from the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, concluded college students today are less empathetic than past college students. The study — which looked at 72 empathy studies, including 14,000 students over a 30-year span — indicated a 40 percent reduction in empathy from students in the 1980s and 1990s.

Pedaling for hope

An MSU student and alumnus are biking 4,000 miles across the U.S. to raise awareness for people with disabilities. The riders must be able to navigate all types of terrain and work together to accomplish the feat. But above all, the riders said it will be a time to build lasting relationships while raising money for a noble cause.

Increased number of mosquitoes expected

Michigan can expect to see an increased number of mosquitoes this summer as frequent, heavy rainfall is expected to persist throughout the season. MSU researcher Michael Kaufman said although the pests will be prevalent, there is no increased risk of diseases such as the West Nile virus.

MSU researchers endorse new education standards

Numerous researchers in MSU’s College of Education have endorsed a set of high school graduation standards approved last week that proponents said will better prepare students for college. The Common Core State Standards were approved June 2 by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers, as well as teachers and administrators nationwide.

A 53-year-old female MSU employee reported multiple windows intentionally broken at Kresge Art Museum, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The windows were broken May 28-30, and damage is estimated at $500.

Granholm nixes online petition

Despite saying she won’t pursue a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, a Facebook group is calling for Gov. Jennifer Granholm to be a write-in candidate for the November election. The group, “Draft Jennifer Granholm for MI 8th Congressional District,” which began late last week, had 37 fans as of Monday.

Harrison road work might not hinder traffic

A East Lansing road, much like the rest of Michigan, will see a summer of construction, city and state officials said. Harrison Road, between Kalamazoo Street and Trowbridge Road, will be under construction for a majority of the summer.

MSU study finds eating disorder link in genetics

The way people with eating disorders are treated could change after a recent study by MSU researchers. Led by Kelly Klump, an associate professor in the MSU Department of Psychology, the study is the first of its kind and has found genetics can influence the development of eating disorders, especially in prepubescent girls with higher levels of estradiol.

MSU sends 6 to NCAA Track and Field Championships in Oregon

For the second consecutive year, six Spartans qualified for nationals by placing in the top 12 in their respective events at regionals. Senior triple jumper Kyron Foster, junior distance runner Emily MacLeod, freshman hurdler Keenan Michael, sophomore distance runner Josh McAlary and freshman thrower Beth Rohl will join sophomore high jumper Becca Buchholtz on the trip to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championships
