West Village development to be discussed at July 20 City Council meeting

The West Village development project’s latest developments will be up for discussion at the July 20 East Lansing City Council meeting. The two-phase project began in 2006 with the demolition and subsequent construction of town houses. The latest brings a potential hotel to the spot located near the intersection of Grand River and Michigan avenues.

Annual festivals officially bring summer to Lansing's Old Town

As two different celebrations that are placed back to back, the Festival of the Moon and Festival of the Sun each emphasized different beverage tastings as well as celebrations. Friday night featured a beer tasting with Kalamazoo-based Bell’s Brewery, Inc., in honor of the shortest night of the year at the Festival of the Moon. Saturday’s event featured a wine tasting of a variety of local wineries to highlight the summer solstice for the Festival of the Sun.

Morgan to play for Washington in summer league

After going undrafted in Thursday’s 2010 NBA Draft, former MSU forward Raymar Morgan was invited to play for the Washington Wizards in the NBA Summer League. The Wizards will play five games in the league, which runs July 9-18 in Las Vegas. Morgan likely will get the chance to play with John Wall, whom the Wizards picked No. 1 overall in the draft.

Law should not be based on fear

The state House overwhelmingly passed legislation last Wednesday that would make it illegal to sell or possess JWH-108, a key substance in the product K2. I am laboring under the assumption that state legislators are attempting to ban this substance because they are afraid it could harm the general populace.

East Lansing residents gather to cheer on U.S. World Cup team

Thousands of miles away from Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, South Africa, where the U.S. soccer team took on Ghana in the World Cup on Saturday, Buffalo Wild Wings, 360 Albert Ave. in East Lansing, was full of fans cheering and yelling for the American squad to pull through with the victory. Despite fans’ enthusiasm, both in South Africa and East Lansing, the U.S. ultimately fell to Ghana, 2-1.

An 83-year-old female reported damage to her vehicle last Monday afternoon at the Cherry Lane Apartments, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Students win national marketing competition, trip to D.C.

At a network reception with 65 other teams of finalists and about 250 people in the profession, political theory and constitutional democracy senior Maria Bianchi and political theory and constitutional democracy senior Laura Kovacek were announced as the winners on June 10. The top six teams were invited to go to Washington, D.C. during Media Scholars Week, where they meet individuals who work for advertising and marketing with companies such as Facebook, Google and CNN.

Akers Hall panty raider will not face charges

A 19-year-old male MSU student will not face criminal charges after being found with 79 pairs of thong underwear in April, Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III said Thursday. Dunnings said about seven people were involved in what appears to have been a game to see who could steal the most.

Fake pot ban moves to Senate

Any substance that mimics the effects of marijuana, including a type of incense growing in popularity called K2, will be illegal in Michigan if a bipartisan package of bills overwhelmingly passed by the state House on Wednesday ultimately becomes law.

Campus buildings rattled by Canada quake

An earthquake near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada — located about 600 miles northeast of East Lansing — shook several campus buildings and caused at least one to evacuate. The 5.0-magnitude quake was felt throughout much of Michigan.

Red Cross hosts blood drive, seeks donors

Although a three-day strike of local American Red Cross union workers did little to significantly impact blood donations, there is an increased need for certain blood types at this time, said Monica Stoneking, communications manager for the American Red Cross’ Great Lakes Region. Locations across campus, including Wednesday’s blood drive at the MSU Physical Plant, continue accepting volunteers willing to donate.

4-H help MI students explore career paths with program

200 classes began at MSU on Wednesday as part of 4-H Exploration Days — a pre-college program designed for career exploration and hands-on learning experiences. About 2,500 students from across the state participated with ages ranging from 11-19. The sessions span a variety of categories, such as aerospace, animal and veterinary science, environmental education and outdoor adventure challenge.

Budget cuts push website to find funds

Enviro-weather, an MSU-sponsored website that collects weather-related data for agricultural workers, is attempting to find private donors to counteract a $40,000 budget deficit due to state cuts in the university’s funding. If the deficit is not filled, some of the 64 statewide weather stations might have to close or reduce services.

Green light phones set to replace landlines

As the university eliminates landlines in residence halls, the MSU Department of Residence Life and the MSU police are increasing the number of emergency green light phones across campus. The Green Light Telephone System involves telephones strategically placed across campus on walkways, roads, parking areas, and buildings, including the Natural Science Building, Bessey, Berkey and Wells halls. They are soon to be installed on every floor of each residence hall.

Attempts to rezone land met with mixed emotions

With the recent economic downturn, developers have had to take measures to make sure their land will sell. An attempt to rezone land in East Lansing, to be voted on July 20, was discussed by the East Lansing City Council on Tuesday night. Caddis Development Group, LLC is requesting to rezone a property located at 1525 W. Lake Lansing Road from restricted office business district to retail sale business district.
