Students rally for women, LBGT rights

About 300 participants will march through campus, carrying signs and shouting chants, to East Lansing’s 54-B District Court on Tuesday. The rally is part of Take Back the Night, a nationwide event happening as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

When poet Ruelaine Stokes compares poetry to human expression, such as dancing and painting, she said it is all the same — each form speaks in relation to the human spirit. As a member of Lansing’s Old Town Poetry Series and an instructor at MSU’s English Language Center, Stokes said her variety of poems — from the silly to the serious — satisfies a wide range of audience members.

Spartans ready for rematch against Broncos

Couple the MSU baseball team’s unexpected loss to Western Michigan in last week’s midweek nonconference battle and two losses in three games to Ohio State this weekend, and head coach Jake Boss Jr. expects the Spartans to be chomping at the bit when Western Michigan comes to Cooley Law School Stadium at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday.

Limiting merit-based raises shouldn't hurt MSU

If a forthcoming recommendation is approved by the MSU Board of Trustees, MSU will not increase the merit-based pay rates that come from its general merit pools. The recommendation to limit the raises already has been unanimously approved by Academic Governance.

Paying it forward

More than 1,700 people, participated in Relay for Life on Friday and Saturday at Ralph Young Field track, walking for survivors of cancer, those who have died of cancer and the caregivers who walked with them on their journey. The event raised $121,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Drag queens and kings perform in annual show

On Saturday, the University Activities Board, RING and the Residence Halls Association hosted their eighth annual drag show in the International Center. Drag is the practice of impersonating a person of the opposite gender, but the impersonation is more of a parody, highlighting certain traits about the gender and exaggerating them to over-the-top proportions.

MSU alumus helps get donation for local food bank

Overwhelmed. It’s how recent MSU alumnus Sonny Geha felt Sunday about being the driving force behind bringing 15 tons of greatly needed protein to the Mid-Michigan area. Geha, a Grosse Pointe resident, recently took fourth place in a national Tongal video contest, which partnered with Tyson Foods Hunger Relief program to provide communities across the country with protein donations in this time of need, said Ed Nicholson, Tyson Foods Inc. director of community relations.
