SADD Day aims to deter drunken driving

Spartans Against Drunk Driving, or SADD, hosted SADD Day on Tuesday in front of the rock on Farm Lane to raise awareness about SADD and the dangers of drinking and driving. Officers from the East Lansing Police Department and the MSU Department of Police and Public Safety and members of SADD passed out information cards and stickers to encourage students not to drink and drive.

Officials and House discuss education

At a Michigan House of Representatives Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee meeting, MSU Extension director Tom Coon and Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, or MAES, director Steve Pueppke testified about the importance of funding these programs. MSU Extension and MAES are funded as part of the state’s higher education budget. The state Senate approved a 3.1 percent cut — about $2.4 million — to that budget for next fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

No opinions are wrong; they just have little problems within the thoughts that can be seen as wrong or be based on inaccuracies. That’s where many people can get into trouble. I’ve always had trouble forming set-in-stone opinions because I listen to arguments and make sure I know where both sides are coming from.

Raising rates won't entice students to 'Live On'

Raising room and board rates by 5.1 percent puts the cost of living on campus for a school year at $7,770, a $376 increase for 2010-11. Not only is this irritating to students who already had signed contracts, it will convince more students to consider the move to apartments and houses.

Conan tickets on sale Wednesday

Former “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien is scheduled to perform at Breslin Center on May 21, ASMSU officials announced Tuesday. Tickets will be available in person for students starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Breslin Center box office. The student presale runs until Friday.

Texting ban passes Mich. house Tuesday

Michigan lawmakers moved another step closer to finalizing a texting while driving ban Tuesday in the state House. The House passed the bill, 74-33, agreeing with the Senate to make texting while driving a primary offense.

A 20-year-old female MSU student reported her cell phone stolen from her desk Thursday while she was studying in the Main Library, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

After meeting 12-year-old Mohammed in Iraq, Maj. David Howell did everything in his power to bring the boy to the U.S. and provide him with medical attention for burns suffered in a house fire as a child. A year after arriving in the U.S., the two have formed a bond and Howell said Mohammed has become part of his family.

City Council to discuss fate of frat houses

East Lansing City Council could decide on a site plan to convert the Lambda Chi Fraternity house, 128 Collingwood Drive, into a 15-room, high-end apartment complex during its Tuesday meeting. The site plan was debated at the April 8 Historic District Commission meeting, where the commission urged Troy, Mich., developer Dale Inman to request a certificate of appropriateness from the city.

Student works on display this weekend

The American Institute of Graphic Arts, or AIGA, MSU Student Group will have its work — which includes posters and book covers — displayed at an exhibition at (SCENE) Metrospace, 110 Charles St. A reception for the work will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday.

E.L. official to host budget forum

East Lansing City Manager Ted Staton will lead a community budget forum at 7 p.m. April 28 at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Residents will have a chance to learn more about the city’s fiscal challenges and the 2011 fiscal year budgets as well as share feedback and ask questions.

In a first-time experiment the Michigan Democratic Party pre-endorsed candidates Saturday for secretary of state and attorney general. Typically, candidates are nominated at state party conventions the August before a November general election.

ASMSU assemblies to hold officer elections

Beginning at Tuesday night’s Academic Assembly meeting, ASMSU will spend this week deciding who will lead the organization’s assemblies during the 2010-11 sessions. Academic Assembly will hold its officer elections Tuesday night and Student Assembly will hold its elections Thursday night.
