White, Swenson, Weaver sign NFL contracts

Former MSU wide receiver Blair White signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday after not being selected in the 2010 NFL Draft, his grandmother confirmed Sunday afternoon. White led the Spartans in receptions (70), receiving yards (990) and touchdown catches (9) this past season, earning first team All-Big Ten honors by the league’s coaches. Former MSU kicker Brett Swenson also will join White in Indianapolis, signing as a free agent.

Spartans take weekend series

MSU baseball head coach Jake Boss Jr. channeled his anger and expressed himself in two words. “I’m disappointed,” Boss told his team Friday after the MSU baseball team was defeated by Illinois, 4-3, in 10 innings in the weekend series opener at McLane Baseball Stadium at Kobs Field. Sometimes those two words sting more than anything else.

Dell, Cunningham shine in Spring Game

Mark Dell and B.J. Cunningham’s roles appeared to be in question for the season, but their 171 combined receiving yards helped the Green team to a 17-10 victory in the Spring Game and showed they can add to the receiver group.

MSU unveils new brand and identity program

On the same stage he was introduced as director of athletics two years ago, Mark Hollis stood in the Clara Bell Smith Student-Athlete Academic Center and made one of the most groundbreaking announcements of his already influential tenure at MSU. Hollis, along with Todd Van Horne of Nike, introduced the athletic department’s brand and identity program Friday afternoon, which includes a new line of uniforms with consistent font, color, logos and numerals for all 25 varsity sports teams.

The 47th session of ASMSU’s Student Assembly filled its leadership positions Thursday night as assembly members elected Eric Branoff, the vice chairperson for external affairs, formerly as its chairperson.

The January earthquake tore Haiti apart, but it brought nine different MSU groups together, Thursday. A talent show called United 4 Haiti Talent Fest took place from 6-10 p.m. at the rock on Farm Lane.

Last season, as junior Keith Nichol played backup to fellow junior Kirk Cousins at quarterback, he stressed that winning games was the most important thing for him. This spring, after making the switch to receiver, his priorities haven’t changed.

Rally combats rising rates of childhood obesity in Mich.

Theresa Viaches’ fifth-grade class at Lewton Elementary School in Lansing has gym class twice a week, and recess never is a guarantee. On Thursday, Viaches’ class attended the Sixth Annual Health Care Rally, an event hosted by the American Medical Student Association, or AMSA, and MSU’s colleges of Human Medicine and Osteopathic Medicine.

No charges filed against student

East Lansing Fire Marshal Bob Pratt said charges will not be filed against hospitality business junior Brian Weber, one of the 11 students who lived in an East Lansing house that caught fire April 16.

Proposed addition slows bill approval

The Michigan House approved a three-bill package to ban texting while driving Tuesday, but state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, D-Salem Township, proposed an additional amendment that suggested using the fines from texting tickets for the state’s general fund.
