Campus and city construction projects are prevalent in the summer, and hundreds of millions of projects currently are in the works or are in planning stages. A number of dorm projects, updates to academic buildings and road closures can be expected throughout the next several months, officials said.

East Lansing officials said city residents might notice more tangible effects of budget reductions in the recently approved 2010-11 fiscal year budget, including reductions to the police and fire departments, as well as the Department of Public Works.

MSU continues search for new Dubai director

MSU officials will meet Friday to sort through dozens of applications for a permanent executive director for the university’s campus in Dubai, slightly more than a week after it was announced the branch campus’ founding director will step down in June. Officials hope to hire a new director in time for the fall semester.

An MSU employee reported damage to a vehicle on May 17 in Lot 91, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The passenger window was found shattered and a small rock was sitting in the seat. No items were stolen from the car.

More than 3,000 parents, their children and childhood advocates flooded the Capitol lawn Wednesday for investment in early childhood programs. Organizers of the fourth annual Star Power 2010 met with state legislators to make their voices heard — an opportunity to inform and spur conversation of development programs at the local level.

As spring winds down and turns into summer, lawn care becomes a major factor in the appeal of local neighborhoods. Unsightly grass height — more than six inches — can turn into about an $85 fine for residents of the city of East Lansing.

Unstable economy worries homeowners

Hosted by Ingham County Register of Deeds Curtis Hertel Jr., the homeowner meeting Tuesday discussed ways homeowners can avoid foreclosure and property fraud. Less money is being attributed to schools, community programs and police safety because property values are going down, causing taxes to go down as well.

Granholm signs retirement bill

A bill to create incentives for teachers to retire was signed into law by Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Wednesday. About 55,000 teachers qualify for retirement under the package and it could create nearly 25,000 in-state teaching jobs.

In spite of accomplishing so much and playing in numerous important tournaments, senior golfer Jack Newman said competing in the 2010 NCAA Notre Dame Regional, which starts Thursday in South Bend, Ind., and goes through Saturday, is right on par with everything else he has done.

Race for Big Ten Baseball Championship comes down to final weekend

With one more weekend left in the Big Ten season, and first and last place separated by just five games, all 10 teams in the conference have a chance to finish in the top six and qualify for the Big Ten tournament. But only Minnesota has clinched a spot. More significantly, every team other than Illinois and Penn State has a chance to be at least co-champions for the regular season.

Ban on smoking protects rights

The smoking ban is in full effect, y’all. As of May 1, Michigan residents no longer can smoke in public areas. The areas of importance include restaurants and bars, as well as patios where food is served. I’m not elated or pissed off about the ban, but I will say I enjoy having clothes that don’t smell of old cigarette smoke. The scent of stale alcohol and shame will do nicely, thank you.

COMMENTARY

City officials' approach to budget commendable

As the budget season gets underway, we would like to commend the city of East Lansing on the 2010-11 fiscal year budget. Although there is news of market rebounds and an economic turnaround, city officials took a conservative approach to deciding how to allocate funds. In this case their estimates take into account a multimillion dollar deficit and reduced revenue from the state and property taxes.
