College is typically referred to as “the best four years of your life." Between living in the same city as some of your best friends, going to parties on the weekend and juggling a schedule of classes, it’s easy to overlook the actual best part of college: when your parents come to visit.
Michigan State University is a predominantly white institution, or PWI, which means Black students across campus might find it hard to find an organization that they feel represents them.
“They’ve gotten to where they are by working twice as hard,” human biology senior Tahnia Quadri said. “To be told that it’s not real media and Hollywood is so heartbreaking to hear, because this is the first time that marginalized communities are being represented.”
Lansing Roller Derby is back for a regular season, after a three-year hiatus from normal gameplay. “(The team) is genuinely one of the most welcoming and inclusive communities I’ve ever been a part of,” Hume said.
“It’s not a secret that the Oscars predominantly lack people of color,” Mosley said. “I think that’s not something they’re trying to hide. Obviously, some steps are being taken to diversify the Oscars, but we clearly have a long way to go, based just on the international nominations.”
