After receiving its season-high score in last weekend’s competition, the MSU gymnastics team is looking to repeat and improve when it faces Ohio State on the road at 7 p.m. Friday.

Despite the three opponents not always being known for their gymnastics programs, head coach Kathie Klages said each team has received quality scores in recent meets, giving the Spartans another challenge while on the road. With recent struggles — such as failing to finish meets well and having more mistakes in meets than in practice — the Spartans hope to see their season improve with injured gymnasts returning to the lineup.
In a season unlike any other, the MSU gymnastics team has seen a variety of challenges and still is struggling to overcome the adversity with which it’s faced. Among the latest struggles, the most recent is the Spartans’ 194.625-191.825 loss to Western Michigan on Sunday.
After losing to Western Michigan earlier this season for the first time in program history, the MSU gymnastics team has had two weeks off to prepare for the meet against its new in-state rival on Sunday in Kalamazoo. “They beat us for the first time ever in the history of MSU and Western gymnastics in January right after (senior gymnast Kathryn Mahoney’s) injury, and that didn’t feel so good,” head coach Kathie Klages said.
In its second home meet of the year, the MSU gymnastics team will host Minnesota at 3 p.m. Saturday at Jenison Field House, where both teams will be competing to raise breast cancer awareness. In their annual meet, the Jan Howard Memorial Flip for a Cure, the Spartans will wear pink leotards and have silent auction items at the competition to raise money for the cause, which head coach Kathie Klages said is very close to the Spartans’ hearts. “Jan Howard was the mother of one of my former gymnasts who I coached here at Michigan State … so it’s very touching for us to have this to remember Jan, who passed away in ‘97 from breast cancer,” Klages said.
