For Homecoming, MSU football looks to both the past and future

When No. 2-ranked MSU (4-0 overall) takes the field this weekend against Purdue (1-3 overall) it will be the first Big Ten game of the season, but also something more. Saturday marks the 100th edition of the annual Homecoming game for the Spartans. “We talk in terms of Michigan State football and tradition and tradition around this country, Michigan State is one of those places that has a great tradition,” Dantonio said.

Dantonio, MSU football says no to HBO "Hard Knocks"-like show

A third-party production company reached out to Spartan Athletics this preseason in hopes of filming a behind-the-scenes reality TV show of the MSU football team to air on HBO, much like the network’s popular NFL show, “Hard Knocks,” according to MSU associate athletics director John Lewandowski.

Izzo, Dantonio named best college coaching tandem in America

CBS Sports recently crowned MSU as having the top head coaching duo in basketball and football with Tom Izzo and Mark Dantonio. The title is hard to argue against, given the amount of growth and accomplishment each program has had the last eight seasons – when Dantonio took the reigns of the football program. It is nearly impossible to refute Izzo’s resume as being one of the top coaches in college basketball.

Gerald Holmes comes through in the clutch when called upon

In No. 2-ranked MSU's first game of the season sophomore running back Gerald Holmes was the second back on the depth chart. In the Spartans 37-24 win over Western Michigan in week one, Holmes carried the ball nine times for 54 yards and a touchdown. Holmes had just three carries over the next two weeks and he watched as true freshman LJ Scott went from the third back on the depth chart to co-starters with redshirt freshman Madre London.

Hobbled Spartans claw their way to 4-0

 The Spartans’ 30-10 win over Central Michigan on Saturday was unsettling even though the team finished strong. The Chippewas exposed holes in the MSU secondary, passing for 285 yards, and held the ball for 31:45 compared to the Spartans’ 28:15.

No. 2 Michigan State grinds out 30-10 victory against CMU

The Spartans’ 30-10 victory over Central Michigan left much to be desired and raised health questions, but there were good take-aways as well. The good The Spartans’ special teams unit allowed 209 kickoff return yards and a touchdown against Western Michigan and 98 punt return yards with a touchdown against Oregon.

No. 2 MSU football team pushes through early season injuries

When No. 2-ranked MSU takes on Central Michigan on Saturday the Spartans will be a different team from the one they planned on entering the season with. Senior linebacker Ed Davis was lost for the year before the season even started with a knee injury. Recently redshirt freshman cornerback Vayante Copeland was lost for the year with a neck injury.

Before the No. 2-ranked Spartans (3-0 overall) take on CMU (1-2 overall) on Saturday here are a few things you should know: Familiar Faces CMU defensive backs coach Archie Collins played safety at MSU, lettering in 1996-97 and then assisted with the coaching of the defensive backs and special teams from 2010-12. The Chippewas defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Greg Colby was Colby a graduate assistant at MSU from 1987-88  and then he returned a defensive assistant from 1995-97
