MTV's 'Buried Life' cast heads to MSU

The MSU University Activities Board, or UAB, will conclude its “Real Heroes: No Capes, No Masks, No Distractions” lecture series Wednesday night at Broad Business College Complex with an appearance from the cast of MTV’s former show, “The Buried Life.”

When model Naima Mora stepped onto the runway in the hotel ballroom, rows of seated fans welcomed her warmly. The crowd sang along as Rihanna blasted through the speakers, the crystals of the dozens of chandeliers overhead as bright as Mora’s smile.

Lumberjacking event Saturday

On Saturday, a more traditional sporting event will take place in Mason, Mich. — lumberjacking. From 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., MSU will host the Midwest Qualifier for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS Series, a lumberjack competition for collegiate and professional athletes at Ingham County Fairgrounds.

The chatter in the airy lounge died down as the quintet settled into their positions. As the pianist began a gentle prelude, the singer prepared her first lyric. She opened with a beautiful sustained note that drew the focus of the entire audience.

Lollapalooza roster is a hit and miss

Like many other college students, I have spent weeks anticipating this year’s lineup release for Lollapalooza with the tenacity of a small child on Christmas Eve. Many of my friends are veterans of the festival and already had planned to take the trip out to Chicago, regardless of the performers. But having never been to Lollapalooza — or any large music festival, for that matter — every musician counted.

Fraternity hosts fashion show

Even amidst a host of delays and technical problems, Alpha Phi Alpha’s Zeta Delta chapter found a way to hold its 11th-annual fashion show March 29 at the Hannah Community Center. A packed house took in nine scenes — halfway between a catwalk show and a choreographed dance routine — featuring more than 50 models, as well as a pair of guest musical performances.

UAB has history helping aspiring musicians

Marc Kanitz is a singer and drummer in the band Audio Monarch. Comprised of himself, MSU students Austin Spencer and Hannah Pilarski and Grand Valley State University student Alex Rushlow, the band has a laid-back, acoustic sound. Because of this, Kanitz said performing for the Noontime Concert Series suits the band well.

Although recently eliminated from “Fashion Star,” New York designer and MSU alumna Tori Nichel has no intention of slowing down or leaving the fashion world.
