Low humor carries 'Franky'

Real Mafioso gang leaders probably wouldn't share their desire to do the bedroom bossa nova with a friend's mother. And if they did it probably wouldn't be nearly as funny as the play "How Ya Doin', Franky Banana?" The two-act play is showing at the Creole Gallery, 1218 Turner St.

Jackson documentary shows yellow journalism rearing head

The hugely controversial Michael Jackson special on "20/20," watched by 27 million viewers Thursday on ABC, was one of the most disgusting displays of unethical, yellow and biased journalism I have seen in a long time. Jackson, the man who charmed teenyboppers and critics alike with his vibrant and intense performing in the '70s and nearly took over the world in the '80s with albums such as "Thriller" and "Bad," was portrayed as a strange, almost dangerous lunatic by British journalist Martin Bashir.

It's really the classic young band story. They come from a small town, get discovered in a bar, record an album and tour the country - except the band will also be making it's Lansing debut. Two Cow Garage, not named for its affiliation with the inhabitants of the many fields of its native Ohio, moooves into Mac's Bar, 2700 E.

'Columbine' good for comedy, bad for politics

"Bowling for Columbine" is a movie for tools. Michael Moore has succeeded in serving up a shrink-wrapped rebellion package for a mindless liberal audience. "Bowling for Columbine" works much like the Truth ads, which seek to deter smokers.

Commercials unrealistic, false

We all know the smell. That skunky smell that looms in the basement of many a party. That dank scent that reminds you of the bathroom of a stadium during a Phish concert.

Local film 'not half bad'

Ah, local film. The hometown representation of the American Hollywood dream. Film and theater students pour their hearts and souls into low-budget productions in an effort to garner experience and push toward the elusive fame that comes with distribution and attention given to their work. For a locally made film, "Money, Guns and Coffee" isn't half bad.

Stampede brings calf roping, bull riding, barrel racing to 'U'

Mention of MSU's Rodeo Club could have those not in the know envisioning members as bull riders performing death-defying stunts to rowdy crowds. And that scene might be a reality to some club members. But interdisciplinary studies in social science junior Jennifer Hill says seasoned riders aren't the only participants of the group. "We have people from all levels - people who have competed and know a lot about horses and rodeos to people who don't know that much but are interested in learning and finding out about it," she said. The 50-member club is hosting this weekend's Spartan Stampede at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education. The event will feature seven categories, including calf roping, bull riding and barrel racing competitions.
