Diverse performers entertain (SCENE) Metrospace crowd

Sandwiched between MSU alumnus Nate Bliton and the Michigan-based Arabic fusion band, Wisaal, The Anatomy of Frank was three band members short, but Kyle Woolard and Jimmy Bullis combined to play at least seven instruments seemingly with ease, making up for the rest of the band Monday at (SCENE) Metrospace.

Rock Camp members take stage at Common Ground

Although actor Jack Black wasn’t in attendance to share a timely AC/DC lyric, the School of Rock was in session Friday at the Common Ground Music Festival. Through a partnership with MSU’s Community Music School, or MSU CMS, and under the direction of Grand Rapids-based rock band, The Outer Vibe, more than 50 students took part in Rock Camp, a weeklong summer program for students ages 12-19.

The Verve Pipe plays for hometown crowd

After almost 20 years of national and international tours and growing fame, the Verve Pipe still loves to return to the Lansing area — the current home city of Donny Brown and fellow band members Randy Sly (keyboard) and Craig Griffith (harmonica) — where it played at the Common Ground Music Festival in downtown Lansing Tuesday night.

Alumnus up for ESPY as Best Male Athlete with a Disability

At 29 years old, Aaron Scheidies, the reigning world paratriathlete champion and MSU alumnus, has competed in more than 150 triathlons and often travels the country telling people about how he overcame adversity. His success in the world of triathlons has positioned him for a 2011 ESPY Award nomination — which will air on ESPN at 9 p.m. Wednesday — in the Best Male Athlete with a Disability category.

Lansing celebrates 4th of July with downtown parade

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Lansing — a route which started down Allegan Street to Capitol Avenue and concluded on Ottawa Street — to take in the Independence Day Parade in downtown Lansing on Monday. With the silhouette of the Capitol as the backdrop, parade participants were greeted with “The Star Spangled Banner” and people waving American flags in unison.

Long awaited U2 concert finally coming to Spartan Stadium

It’s been almost a year since Bono was scheduled to appear in East Lansing, but because of the lead singer’s recovery from back surgery, U2’s 360 Tour show had to postpone the concert. Leaving fans with another year to build up more excitement, the anticipated concert will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at Spartan Stadium.

Students help develop "Man vs. Wild" game

With the help of MSU’s Capstone program, fans of “Man vs. Wild” now have the opportunity to put themselves in Bear Grylls’ shoes as they navigate his world and fight for survival in Scientifically Proven Entertainment, or SPE’s, “Man vs. Wild: The Game.” The game — available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii consoles — is the first such game to be developed in Michigan for all three home game consoles.

Alumni create new iPhone accessory made for sleeping

At the rate that companies develop new smart phones and gadgets, it’s only appropriate new accessories accompany them. With that in mind, MSU alumni Jim McGaw and Tara Armbruster— who graduated in 2004 and now live in Santa Barbara, Calif. — decided to develop a product geared toward people who sleep with their iPhones.
