Latest release from Sony a must for music lovers, questionable for hardcore gamers

The folks from Sony are at it again with a new release for PlayStation 2 called "Amplitude." This game, a quasi-sequel to the game "Frequency," also for PS2, allows players to "mix and remix hit songs" by a bunch of well-known artists, including David Bowie, blink-182, Pink, Weezer, Garbage and more. I say "quasi-sequel" because, although having not played the original, it's hard to imagine what simpler concept there could be to make this game from. The gameplay is almost mind-numbingly simple.

It's a so-so day for new releases this week but we can always count on one group to pull us all through - The Blues Brothers. "The Essential Blues Brothers" includes a number of Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) classics, including "Soul Man," "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "Riot in Cell Block Number Nine." Don't judge Four Lincolns' album by its cover - 'Laxadaisical' worth a listen

Please excuse the band's name, it's not the most convincing or memorable. But if you don't judge it by its name (or in this case, also its cover) Grand Rapids-based Four Lincolns and its new release "Laxadaisical" have the ability to shock. Opening track "Never in Love," illustrates the band's abilities to write extremely strong lyrics - as does much of the CD. Although strong lyrics make a song, well, a poem, they aren't anything without the singer's ability to relay their meaning.

'The Last Waltz' a goodbye to The Band, era of music

The Band's final concert was not only a goodbye to a group who'd set strides in the folk/rock genre but also a goodbye to an era of the musical family. The night was Thanksgiving of 1976; big name musicians Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Dr. John, Ron Wood, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Hawkins, Paul Butterfield, Ringo Star and The Staples all shared the stage with The Band. Captured on film and directed by Martin Scorsese, "The Last Waltz" is a documentary of that magical night when more than 5,000 fans crowded into San Francisco's Winterland Arena, where The Band performed its very first show about 16 years before.
