Most of us don’t go to school just for the pure joy of learning; we get a degree so we can get a job. Unfortunately, some professors’ strict attendance policies are getting in the way of students finding work.
It’s ironic that students do not believe their own student government is in touch with them. ASMSU considers itself an entity whose goal is to “establish a collective student voice.”
Expecting an insurance company to help students and boost downtown East Lansing seems counterintuitive, but Jackson National Life has exceeded expectations. Even the feeling of walking past the building and peering into the big glass windows to see the quirky workplace inside is encouraging.
After years of disappointment and failure, a grocery store and new apartments are exactly what this city needs.
Instead of drafting policies to dramatically shift the face of the city, the commission should focus on tapping into the patrons that already are responsible for boosting business. Ditching the cap on patrons at bars and working to change the 50/50 ordinance will help, but additional policies along the same vein must continue for the city’s success.
Today, MSU opens the Veterans’ Resource Center, a place for veterans to come together and share experiences. While this is a positive sign for student veterans, having a public space is worthless without adequate support from university administrators.
It isn’t uncommon to be approached by someone begging for spare change while walking along Grand River Avenue. However, until about four weeks ago, the act of panhandling was actually considered illegal under East Lansing’s City Code.

This city could be under new leadership come tomorrow night. East Lansing voters will elect three members in Tuesday’s city council election: Two four-year seats vacated by incumbents Kevin Beard and Vic Loomis and one partial, two-year term are up for grabs. Six candidates, three winners. In a close-knit community like East Lansing, council members have the power to make decisions that will alter the face of the city for years to come.
Halloween is the only time of year that a person can dress up as whatever they want without the risk of judgement from their peers — that is, until a costume takes a turn from clever to potentially offensive.
After years of listening to university officials talk at students, the last thing they need is yet another administrator to send them off into the real world.
The continuous stream of debris dumped into the Red Cedar needs to stop. After all, it’s not a dumpster. The Red Cedar is a part of MSU.

MSU has taken on strong initiatives to close the pay gap. It conducts annual salary analyses and makes sure campus departments are clear and consistent in their decision-making process. Other efforts to close the gap include clarifying the process of raising wages and negotiating for better salaries.
Although it always is the sexual assault survivor’s decision whether to report the incident, we encourage anyone who has been assaulted to dial 911.
Whether or not marriage equality has popular support does not make it any less of a right. It was not the constituents’ place to make a blanket judgment in part implying same-sex couples are inherently worse parents, and it is irresponsible for the state to defend that decision.
We still have work to do to make campus a more welcoming place for everyone, but the new center is a testament to how positive change can happen if students advocate for themselves and fight to make MSU a better place.
While we don’t advocate delaying housing plans until the last minute, there is no need to feel rushed or pressured.
Spartan Village is old. We understand that, and so does Residence Education and Housing Services, or REHS, which has devised a strategic plan that puts the demolition of Spartan Village Apartments between 2017 and 2020. It’s time to tear it down, but not without first considering the massive displacement that mainly will affect international and graduate students.
