In the week of Sept. 28, MSU reported a total of 27 cases connected to the university. In the week prior, they saw nearly four times that amount with 103 cases the week of Sept. 21.
This comes following the Michigan Supreme Court ruling Friday that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer lacked the authority to declare a state of emergency after April 30.

These orders keep several COVID-19 protections in place including the use of face coverings, limitations on indoor and outdoor gathering sizes, 50% or 125-person capacity limit for restaurants and mandatory employee health screenings, according to the release.
MSU College of Human Medicine’s Department of Translational Neuroscience Chair Jack Lipton said it appears they have been able to catch positive COVID-19 cases in the very early phases using the MSU early detection program. Currently, 75% of samples are focused on the spread of COVID-19 among asymptomatic students.
Candidates from the College of Social Science, College of Arts and Letters and College of Communication Arts and Sciences discussed issues such as the return to campus, university transparency and the pass/fail option.
The mask requirement extends to the outdoor, public spaces within the boundaries of the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority. The requirement would have ended on Tuesday. The newly extended order is currently in place for seven additional days.

On Thursday, presidents of MSU, UM, and Wayne State met to talk about the COVID-19 pandemic and what it has meant for university research, but also made predictions about the pandemic in 2021.
"It's not that hard — take it easy on the partying this semester, bring our numbers down and be good humans," MSU alumna Kristin Bellar said.
Since Aug. 24, 1,250 COVID-19 cases have been revealed connected to the university.

"We have 51 incident reports currently being processed by our Dean of Students Office for possible violations of the community compact and Ingham County emergency orders," MSU Deputy Spokesperson Dan Olsen said in an email.
With 2,709 COVID-19 cases in Ingham County, Ingham County Health Officer Linda Vail said about 40% — or 980 — come from the first two weeks of September alone. About 700 or more of them, she said, are likely related to MSU, though more data analysis will be required to make a final determination.
