Use college years to explore new cultures

Being on a college campus is one of the best experiences one can have. It gives each student the opportunity not only to be educated academically, but also socially and culturally. But how many students actually will take the time to learn about other cultures that they see bits and pieces of each day?

New health care plan will benefit everyone

By signing the massive health care reform bill into law, Obama will go down as passing one of the most epic pieces of legislation in American history, no matter how a person views it. And instead of failing and weakening his stance on other issues after making health care a top priority, Obama likely will see a little bit of a increase in support, despite all the naysayers.

Take closer look at food you consume

While we all understand that gas-guzzling Hummers and Styrofoam are not the best when it comes to protecting Mother Nature, we neglect to comprehend that a very important and relevant part of our daily lives usually is not even thought of when prioritizing environmental sustainability.

COMMENTARY

Higher education value declining

Students repeatedly surf the Web, do homework for other classes or text message. Some professors see this as a problem and strictly prohibit the use of electronic devices in class, only to be embarrassed when their own phone rings and class is paused while he or she takes a call. Clearly, the prohibition of electronic devices is not the solution. These in-class diversions are a symptom of the actual problem: Classes aren’t engaging.

Seize opportunity to use green energy

Michigan has the perfect opportunity to transition to a cleaner, more energy efficient economy. With the American automobile industry in shambles and a lack of blue-collar jobs, now is the time to jump on the green bandwagon.

Technology barrier to human contact

Ring, ring, you have officially been dumped by someone else who was paid to do it. A new Web site, called IDUMP4U.com, will let you break up with your girlfriend or boyfriend for the cost of two Italian Night Club subs from Jimmy John’s and 50 cents in change.

Celebrate St. Patty's day with purpose

The day doesn’t have to be used to celebrate the real acts of St. Patrick, or even the mythical ones. Even if it’s just as simple as hoping to catch a little green dude and being rewarded with his pot of gold; that’s better than getting more than adequately tipsy for no reason.

Government agencies need restructuring

According to a recent report released by the Department of Homeland Security’s, or DHS, Office of Inspector General, between 2006 and 2008 the department lost 289 weapons in the line of duty. No amount of language can demonstrate the actual gravity of this properly enough, so I will just state it as plainly as possible: DHS agents literally lost and forgot their weapons.

Take time to enjoy beauties of campus

Good thing I went to Beaumont Tower. Good thing I walked the skinny, turning staircase to the top. Good thing I was sitting in a softly sunlit room in an old folding chair watching Ray McLellan play the carillon to north campus.

Nation in state of ethical decay

Babylon has something for everybody! For the rebellious among you, we’ve got “alternative” music, thick black plastic glasses, clothing sporting the image of Che Guevara (possibly made in the “sweat-free” sweatshops of Cambodia), mineral water imported from Europe and even a “progressive” president — who’s black!

Studying abroad an individual choice

I’m more than a little hesitant to jump on board of one of MSU’s fine study abroad programs. I like my trips to be a nice mixture of educational and relaxation activities, so I’d rather not base my trek on an education. Although my mind is teetering back and forth between going, I acknowledge the fact there are countless benefits for participants and that experiences vary from person to person.

More laughter needed in political squabbles

In reality, we’re always going to disagree. That’s just the nature of politics. Big issues take time, because they can affect our nation for a long time to come. It’s more important that we hold intelligent discussions about these issues instead of resorting to pathetic name calling and heckling. Maybe if we can laugh at ourselves, it’ll be easier to identify with one another.

Keep an open mind despite liberal bias

In February, the Intercollegiate Studies Institute released a study that assessed how well American college graduates understand crucial components of American civics, even things that would be asked on a citizenship test. The results from the survey surprisingly show that college actually fails to sufficiently produce civic knowledge in college graduates. Yet, for some strange reason I find it pretty hard to easily accept that. What I don’t find hard to believe is that the study also shows that college can actually influence students’ opinions to lean toward the liberal end of the spectrum.

K2's legality should apply to marijuana

Picture this: A young student in his early 20s is sitting on a couch. He picks up the large glass bong from the coffee table in front of him, presses the lighter to the carefully packed bowl full of dried herb and draws deeply with his lungs, filling his body full of smoke. Suddenly, he’s higher than Mount Everest — and it was all legal.

Society can give power to symbols

Often when people look at symbols, they find a general meaning has been given to them. Without that significance, the symbol merely is an inanimate object that almost is invisible to the eyes of society. But what is it that gives a symbol meaning? Is it the way it looks? Is it where it is founded or built? Is its meaning and significance based off of one person’s perception?

Toyota scandal helps boost American autos

Now isn’t the time for Toyota to slip up as an automaker — that was a year ago, when the Big Three were in major financial trouble. Now, with American companies making a comeback, even I, a longtime proponent of European cars, am looking toward supporting domestic cars.

Same-sex marriage opponents wrong

Just ask any of the students at MSU what they think about equal access for gays and lesbians to jobs, housing, government benefits and more. They’ll most likely tell you they’re in favor of them. And why not? College students seem to be more understanding and open to change than generations before them. Ask their opinion on same-sex marriage, however, and that’s where opinions radically get divided.
