Council might receive funds for green improvements

The city of East Lansing might receive more than $200,000 to make environmentally friendly updates. The City Council approved a resolution at its Tuesday meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, allowing the Department of Planning and Development to apply for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant. The grant would give funds to the city to improve city-owned buildings using green practices and also to explore ideas for alternative energy. “We have a number of ideas we will be incorporating into the city,” said Tim Schmitt, an East Lansing community development analyst. City Council approves resurfacing of Mt. Hope

Mount Hope Road might soon see an $800,000 face-lift after the East Lansing City Council approved a state-funded revitalization at Tuesday’s meeting. The City Council approved a bid from the Michigan Department of Transportation, or MDOT, to reconstruct the road from the city’s eastern limits to its western ones at its 7 p.m. meeting Tuesday at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

A $116 million redevelopment project will be up for its fourth extension at tonight’s East Lansing City Council work session. The City Center II project, which is a mixed-use project slated for the corner of Abbot Road and Grand River Avenue, is scheduled to be discussed at the 7 p.m. meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

Committee considers adding Cowley Avenue to historic district

Residents of Cowley Avenue might soon be a part of the Chesterfield Hills Historic District if an exploratory committee finds their property meets certain criteria. The historic district, which includes homes of a certain age and type, is up for re-evaluation this year as called for by the plan that established the district.

Police department to scale back overtime, training

To reduce costs but maintain its force, the East Lansing Police Department will be decreasing overtime, training and equipment spending, East Lansing police Chief Tom Wibert said. “What causes us to have a good service is that we have good people,” he said. “And we want to keep them.”

The city of East Lansing plans to approve its $95 million budget for 2009-10 fiscal year during its meeting Tuesday. And despite the downturn of Michigan’s economy, East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis said the city has managed its budget well.
