Lansing declared a state of emergency Sunday as a result of damage from the weekend’s storms which could leave thousands of residents in the dark as late as Tuesday or Wednesday, local energy providers said. Severe thunderstorms as early as Friday night cut power and caused damage in Lansing area homes.

Council delays vote on City Center II

When the East Lansing City Council’s Tuesday meeting approached 1 a.m., the council decided to defer its decision on the site plan, special use permit and zoning plans for City Center II until its June 17 meeting.

Free fishing weekend encourages new fishers

As a way to promote appreciation and conservation of Michigan’s outdoors, the Department of Natural Resources, or DNR, is hosting the state’s annual summer Free Fishing Weekend Saturday and Sunday. The DNR has held two separate free fishing weekends every year since 1986, the second being in February, said Lynne Thoma, departmental technician with the DNR.

Number of rabid animals growing in Mich.

The number of rabid animals in Michigan has been increasing annually, resulting in raised awareness on the potentially fatal disease. Last year Ingham County had more reported rabid animals than any other county in Michigan with 29 animals.
