Ceremony to honor distinguished alumni

MSU men's basketball head coach Tom Izzo, Trustee Dee Cook and former MSU Director of Athletics Clarence Underwood will be presented with alumni awards for their contributions to the university today. MSU will honor alumni who have made significant contributions to the university, their communities, states and nation during the awards ceremony. The event is sponsored by the MSU Alumni Association and will take place at 6:15 p.m.

Car makers discuss vehicle future in Troy

Automobile makers will discuss the future of vehicle propulsion at MSU's Management Education Center in Troy on Wednesday. The discussion is one of many events that are a part of the 38th annual Broad Executive Forum.

Members of two MSU fraternities are asking students to possibly save a life with fewer than 15 minutes of their time.Alpha Phi Alpha and Lambda Phi Epsilon will sponsor a bone marrow drive from 10 a.m.

Food poisoning Web site hurt by lack of attention

A university-affiliated Web site devoted to helping users identify trends in food poisoning has drawn some interest from across the nation but not much attention overall. The Web site, www.rusick2.msu.edu, is run by officials at MSU's National Food Safety and Toxicology Center.

'U' hosts hayride for community

A brisk fall breeze brushed over the faces of Lansing-Area residents 12-year-old Kierin Kerbawy and 11-year-old James Lindsay, who both sat on bundles of hay Monday evening and gazed through the green bars of a tractor as it drove through campus. Kerbawy and Lindsay were part of the group of East Lansing residents, Lansing residents and students who joined the hayride for a trip around campus to learn about MSU's history while enjoying free doughnuts, cider and the fall night air. The "Homecoming Hayride and History: A MSU Historical Tour" was the first event in a week filled with University Activity Board-sponsored Homecoming events.

Black Student Alliance leader resigns; VP assumes position

The president of MSU's largest group within the Council of Racial Ethnic Students resigned at a meeting last Thursday, but the group is still planning to continue its work as planned. Black Student Alliance President Latisha Heath resigned from her position.

Professor to speak on monkey behavior

MSU students will have the opportunity hear a lecture from Paul Vasey, a researcher who studied Japanese Macaques in their consistent preference for same-sex partners, despite evolutionary theories that would demonstrate otherwise.The seminar, "Sexual Partner Preference in Female Japanese Macaques," will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Capital campaign ahead of schedule

Several organizations, people and groups donated gifts to MSU as part of the capital campaign, an effort to raise $1.2 billion by 2007 to grow an MSU endowment.Bob Thomas, information officer for University Development, said a silent phase of the campaign began in 1999 before it was announced to the public in 2002.

Picnic kicks off 'U' Japan Week

With his hair flying behind a black-and-white headband and arms powerfully pounding out a rhythm, Taiko drummer Ryan Toguri commanded the attention of about 200 people Sunday afternoon at the Japanese Garden Picnic. Audience members responded to Toguri's drumbeats and the other three drummers in Kaminari Daiko, a group out of Chicago, by moving their feet and legs rhythmically. The picnic was the first event of Japan Week, which runs through Oct.

400 people walk for AIDS awareness

Participants in the 5K Aids Walk Michigan-Lansing waved their arms and laughed, receiving honks of support from passing cars as they marched down Grand River Avenue on Sunday afternoon.More than 400 MSU students, local residents and other college students battled chilly temperatures and a brief rain shower to raise awareness and money for the Lansing Area AIDS Network.

Campaign renovates laboratory row

University officials are raising $15.3 million in private donations to restore three of MSU's oldest buildings while also creating a garden connecting the historical structures on West Circle Drive. Cook, Old Botany and Chittenden halls, located on the northeast part of campus, are three of the six buildings in laboratory row - an area with buildings dating back to 1888. Janet Kreger, director of major and planned gifts in MSU's Office of Development, said the fund-raising effort, or the Campus Heritage Intiative, is part of the five-year, $1.2 billion capital campaign.

A legal analysis of the Supreme Court's decision regarding the University of Michigan's admissions lawsuits will be held today at the MSU-DCL College of Law. In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court ruled in Grutter v.

It's a new campaign for an old concern. The push to add sexual orientation and gender identity to Michigan's Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act has been introduced several times since the act's inception 15 years ago.

Students presented with research fellowship

Three MSU students are among the first to be awarded by the Department of Homeland Security's new scholars and fellows program - a program students and faculty say is a never-before-seen attempt to recruit researchers."Having those agencies fund students before they begin the forensic science program is very unprecedented," assistant forensic science professor David Foran said.
