MSU prepares for challenging 3-week stretch

A shot at the Big Ten Championship, several key tournament finishes and an exciting end to one of the most successful seasons in school history are all on the line during the next three weeks for the No. 14 MSU women’s golf team.

Joseph mindful of keeping Spartans focused on present

Prior to last weekend’s series against Minnesota, the MSU softball team was 2-8 in one-run games, including a February stretch in which it lost four out of five games by 2-1 scores. Fast-forward one week after sweeping Minnesota by scores of 2-1 and 7-6, and the Spartans (16-17 overall, 2-2 Big Ten) have a newfound confidence going into this weekend’s series at Indiana (7-21, 0-2). “We weren’t tough enough, and we weren’t finishing, so we had leads, and then we blew it in the end,” MSU softball head coach Jacquie Joseph said. “We’ve been doing that a lot.

MSU tries to stay focused vs. Bowling Green

After the MSU baseball team pounded Iowa, 26-11, Sunday, MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. had an important message for his team. In the postgame huddle, Boss stressed not to let the lopsided victory get into his team’s head, especially with a tough game against Bowling Green slated for 3:05 p.m. Tuesday at McLane Baseball Stadium at Old College Field.

Despite foul finish, Spartans exceed expectations

The NCAA Tournament is a funny thing in that all the buzzer beaters and out-of-body experiences change the way you think about the game. It reaches a point when seeds are thrown out the window and everybody — especially in a season that reflects more parity than any in recent memory — is on an even keel. Everybody gives you something to believe in.

Seniors get sour swan song

Indianapolis — The reporters cleared. Raymar Morgan took a deep breath, and with an expressionless look, took off his jersey. The word “State” no longer was present across his chest. He took off his shoes and placed them to the side. Still, no expression. It wasn’t supposed to end like this.

Despite loss, future bright for Spartans

Even without their best player, and their best shooter and one of their best post players not anywhere near 100 percent, the Spartans were able to storm through the adversity and reach the Final Four.

Indianapolis – A span of about 10 minutes in the MSU and Butler men’s basketball teams’ game Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium was a perfect microcosm of the two teams’ philosophies that they’ve built their programs on.

MSU falls to Butler, 52-50

Indianapolis — The MSU men’s basketball team’s unlikely Final Four run came to an end Saturday night in Indianapolis as the Spartans couldn’t manage a late comeback against Butler and fell, 52-50.
