Hockey ticket goof-up angers students

A rude awakening greeted several Spartan hockey fans Monday morning when their student season tickets weren’t available as scheduled in the Athletic Ticket Office in Jenison Field House. The tickets were supposed to be available at 8 a.m.

After announcing Wednesday the home game against Missouri was on, MSU and Missouri officials decided to cancel the game Thursday, because of unusual travel logistics following the terrorist attack Tuesday.

Surprises have surrounded sophomore outside hitter-turned-defensive specialist Stephanie Knopp all year.A pre-season chat with MSU head coach Chuck Erbe left Knopp thinking she had to improve if she wanted to play, she said.

Special teams say expect improvement

Even though head football coach Bobby Williams keeps his practices under wraps, everyone knows MSU must be focusing on special teams this week after Central Michigan blocked four punts in Saturday’s season opener.Special teams and linebackers coach Sal Sunseri took the blame for Saturday’s punt problems and said he should’ve lined up more athletic players in front of the punt team in practice.

Big Ten athletic directors will decide in a phone conference Wednesday morning whether or not this weekend’s football games will continue as scheduled, said Sue Lister, the Big Ten Conference associate commissioner.

Pistons begin media tour in Okemos, ham it up with students before attacks

Okemos - A day that ended up terribly somber started off in a fun, light-hearted way for some local school children.Four members of the Detroit Pistons took part in a pep assembly at Kinawa Middle School, 1900 Kinawa Drive in Okemos, to promote their upcoming season with the students and local media Tuesday morning.But in the wake of the terrorist attacks across the United States on Tuesday, Okemos was the only stop head coach Rick Carlisle, forwards Brian Cardinal and Rodney White and director of player personnel John Hammond made before the remainder of the four-city media tour was postponed.The four were also supposed to visit Grand Rapids, Traverse City and Saginaw.Before the news hit, the Pistons addressed and entertained the crowd of area adolescents with free T-shirts, motivational messages and a brief dunk exhibition by White.

Hartley earns Big Ten player of the week nod

Things are good in the world of MSU volleyball. The Spartans (7-0) are off to their best start in 12 years, and one of their star players is the reigning Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week. Senior outside hitter Erin Hartley earned the honor with an MVP effort in the Coca-Cola Spartan Invitational, which the Spartans won this weekend.
