Secondary comes up big without starters

MSU’s defensive secondary may have entered Saturday’s Homecoming game against Iowa as a question mark but emerged as an exclamation point in the Spartan’s 31-28 win.The loss of both starting cornerbacks to ankle injuries in the bye week gave MSU reason to worry.

Spartans beat Iowa 31-28 in Homecoming game

The Spartans may have slipped by Iowa 31-28 in today’s Homecoming game at Spartan Stadium. But MSU played like MSU - it topped off its big plays with even bigger turnovers. Senior defensive tackle Josh Shaw had the first crowd pleaser in the opening series, intercepting a pass from Hawkeye quarterback Kyle McCann, who had four interceptions in the loss. Three plays later, sophomore Jeff Smoker connected with senior receiver Herb Haygood on a 47-yard slant that placed the Spartans on the Iowa 1-yard line.

Secondary gets rearranged

MSU head coach Bobby Williams played musical chairs with his lineup after both of his starting cornerbacks suffered injuries in the bye week.Both senior DeMario Suggs and freshman Jason Harmon broke an ankle and are out eight to10 weeks.As a result, Williams shuffled his players and even dipped into his offensive resources.

Suggs breaks ankle, joins Harmon on DL

Senior cornerback DeMario Suggs broke his left ankle in practice Thursday, a day after redshirt freshman cornerback Jason Harmon broke his right ankle in practice.Both Suggs and Harmon suffered similar injuries and will miss eight-to-10 weeks, Assistant Athletics Director John Lewandowski said.“He was on punt coverage,” Lewandowski said.

Cornerback out 8-10 weeks

Redshirt freshman cornerback Jason Harmon broke his right ankle in practice Wednesday and will be out for eight to 10 weeks, MSU Assistant Athletics Director John Lewandowski said. Harmon was participating in seven-on-seven drills and landed on his foot awkwardly. “He planted his foot, and it just broke,” Lewandowski said.

Field goal ends roller-coaster game in Spartan loss

Evanston, Ill. - It was a game that will be remembered as an instant classic. In MSU’s 27-26 loss to Northwestern on Saturday, the lead changed three times in the final 28 seconds, taking the Spartans on the most frantic ride many players said they’d ever ridden. “Emotions went both ways,” sophomore wide receiver Charles Rogers said.

Gridders fall to Northwestern in heartbreaker

Evanston, Ill - Before the final second ticked away, the game seemed over at least three times. But Northwestern (3-0, 1-0 Big Ten) scored a 47-yard field goal as time expired to beat MSU 27-26 in thrilling fashion. Moments earlier it had looked like a happy ending for MSU (2-1, 0-1). Senior wide receiver Herb Haygood returned a Northwestern kickoff 84-yards with 18 seconds left in the game, to put the Spartans up 26-24.

Cleaves horses around

Mateen Cleaves may not be a Spartan or a Detroit Piston any more, but his local fan support doesn’t seem to care.About 30 fans watched as Cleaves played horse Thursday in front of the Okemos Sprint Store at 3544 Meridian Crossing Drive with four radio station winners.

Duckett vs. Anderson

If MSU’s T.J. Duckett is considered the Midwest’s “freak of nature,” then Northwestern’s Damien Anderson comes in a close second. Both Heisman Trophy candidate running backs are known for their uncanny speed and strength, despite the fact they differ in size. Duckett, at 6-foot-1 and 249 pounds, bruised his way to 1,353 yards in 2000, while Anderson, at 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds, scampered for 2,063 - the most in the Big Ten.
