City Council makes plans for MSU, townships to join Greater Lansing Taxi Authority

With all parties on board, it will make the process for cab drivers in the area to get registered shorter, but also eliminate issues of inconsistency such as cab drivers having licenses to operate in the city of East Lansing or Lansing, but not the other that have occurred in the past. “What you really need is one uniform set of rules for the whole region because that’s what the taxi market looks like. E.L. will implement new curbside recycling this fall

East Lansing has received a $125,000 grant from The Recycling Partnership to assist with a new curbside recycling system later this year. As a result of the the grant and matching funds from the city, new 96-gallon carts will be rolled out to East Lansing residents at no cost by early to mid-October.

The 19th annual Summer Solstice Jazz Festival on June 19-20 featured musicians from all over the world and provided pivotal experience to youth jazz players. The festival was presented by the City of East Lansing, MSU College of Music and the Wharton Center for Performing Arts; with artistic direction from the director of Jazz Studies at MSU, Rodney Whitaker. “My favorite part is really hearing everybody perform, that’s what this is all about,” said Whitaker.

MSU Police warn community of phone scammers

MSU Police are alerting community members of East Lansing of a potential telephone scam. According to a press release from the MSU Police, several East Lansing community members have reported callers claiming to be police officers and telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest for tax evasion with the FBI and IRS.

Here are the most important stories from the week of June 19.  The Board of Trustees raised tuition for upper and underclassmen for the sixth year in a row and banned smoking on campus effective August of 2016.  For graduate students of most colleges, the tuition will increase 4 percent, or $26.75 per credit hour. Another set of approvals included extending  the contracts for athletic director Mark Hollis, men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo, women’s basketball coach Suzy Merchant and men’s ice hockey coach Tom Anastos by a unanimous vote.  In city news, GrandRiver Coffee Cafe, on  515 W.

College of Human Medicine dean steps down

Dr. Marsha Rappley is leaving her position as dean of MSU's College of Human Medicine, she announced Tuesday, according a report by MLive. Rappley has accepted a new position with Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Va., as vice president of for health sciences and chief executive officer of VCU Health System. Rappley accepts the position after serving as a faculty member at MSU since 1988 and acting as dean since 2006.

MSU Grand Rapids Research Center begins construction

Ground was broken Wednesday on the construction of MSU's new Grand Rapids Research Center. The building is an $88.1 million, six-story, 162,800-square-foot facility that will include research program spaces and five core labs that will benefit the MSU College of Human medicine scientists and researchers. "We envision the MSU research building and Grand Rapids Innovation Park to be a gateway to the Medical Mile and a magnet attracting business in life sciences and growth in the biotechnology sectors," MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon told MSU Today. The new research facility will be located on the corner in Monroe Avenue in downtown Grand Rapids and is expected to be completed and opened late 2017.  When it opens, it is expected to support 260 members of the MSU College of Human Medicine's scientific research teams.

MSU Board of Trustees approve increased tuition and smoking ban

The Trustees raised tuition by 2.7 percent for in-state lower division students, or roughly $12 per credit hour, and 2.7 percent for upper division students. Though the Trustees lamented the tuition raise, with many blaming the declining state support for higher education. “These always difficult decisions, balancing acts," President Lou Anna K.

Armed robbery in Okemos possibly tied to medical marijuana

Meridian Township Police are investigating an armed robbery which took place the evening of of June 11 at the 1600 Block of Pebblestone in Okemos. According to a police report, at approximately 8:20 p.m., the two men living in the residence realized that two subjects had entered the home.
