Governor signs in new election laws

Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a handful of bills on Thursday to begin the new year of legislation. The governor signed a package of bills modifying Michigan's election policy by decreasing the number of elections held each year.

E.L. housing complex plans revised

Plans for a new housing complex in northern East Lansing may soon get the green light from the city council. Gillespie Development & Management President Patrick Gillespie will submit revised construction plans for The Beaumont, a 40-acre housing complex planned to be built west of Crossing Place Apartments on Coleman Road.

Protest calls budget cuts 'death' of 'U'

Lansing - Placing two human-sized green coffins on the Capitol steps during a rally Thursday afternoon, students, administrators and lawmakers sent a message to legislators about proposed budget cuts to MSU. Chanting "No more cuts at MSU" and displaying dozens of placards, the crowd, spearheaded by the Coalition of Labor Organizations, marched down Michigan Avenue to the Capitol to protest what they call the looming "death of Michigan State." "It's very realistic, truth be told," Scott Henkel, president of the Graduate Employees Union, said.

Childcare offered at E.L. community center

The East Lansing Parks, Arts and Recreation Department will offer winter break childcare at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbott Road. The program will provide several activities, including indoor and outdoor games, art projects, dramatic play activities, swimming and free play.
