A wallet containing $15 and multiple forms of identification was stolen from the purse of a 29-year-old student on Monday while she was in the Music Practice Building, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The female student told police she left her closed purse in an unlocked room at 7 p.m. while she returned her instrument to its hall locker, McGlothian-Taylor said. When she returned to the room one minute later, her purse was open and the wallet was missing. The victim observed a male suspect, described as 5-feet-8-inches tall and 180 to 200 pounds, in a building hallway, but isn’t sure if he’s involved in the theft, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Since 1994, Scavenger Hunt Vintage Clothing has been one of East Lansing’s more obscure stores — and owner Eric Merckling likes it that way. “It’s less of an ‘anywhere USA’ kind of thing, and more ‘independent store owner,’” Merckling said. The shop, 503 E. Grand River Ave., contains clothing Merckling finds himself at sales and other thrift stores, while a surprising amount comes from people coming directly to him and handing over their threads. “There’s no one specific secret,” Merckling said, describing his method as a search-and-destroy tactic. Although many people walk by the shop without a glimpse, the music blaring from speakers tends to draw people in. Getting people to walk down those steps isn’t easy, Merckling said, but people are usually surprised by what they find. “I get a really positive response once I get them in here,” he said.

CORRECTION: Teresa Dunn, assistant professor of painting for the Department of Art & Art History should have been quoted to say, “The Western history of Classical or Academic painting is based in skills that are rooted in observing and studying the human form, skeletons, plaster casts of the human form as well as the muscular structure of the body. Part of the idea behind this kind of approach to studying art is that the human form is the most complex and difficult of forms to draw.”

Humans have long attributed acts of nature to unseen entities. Ancient pagan mythologies were particularly rich with stories of gods representing personifications of natural forces. The Norse, for example, believed that thunderstorms resulted from the activities of the god Thor, and lightning was caused by Thor’s use of Mjolnir, his mystical hammer.
