Spartan Heisman? On defense? Well, maybe.
After a standout home opener against Western Michigan, the MSU defense is getting national recognition, including a small amount of hype for the Heisman trophy.
Well, sort of.
Jones and Drummond each grabbed an interception in MSU 26-13 regular season opening win against Western Michigan. Drummond stood out all evening against the Broncos, particularly for his one-handed interception, which has been replayed multiple times across college football highlight shows this week.
“Given the ongoing state of disrepair on the other side of the ball – MSU’s only other touchdown against the Broncos came on a fumble return by DT Shilique Calhoun in the fourth quarter – Spartan fans can only hope the defense comes up with a way to contribute to the scoreboard every week,” Hinton said in the article.
Detroit Free Press reporter Joe Rexrode also entertained his readers with his “Kurtis Drummond for September Heisman” tweet during MSU’s victory over the Broncos.
It’s unlikely Jones or Drummond will walk away with the highly-coveted trophy awarded to college football’s most talented player.
But for MSU’s sake given the team’s offensive deficiencies, the duo will need to continue to play at their current pace if the Spartans have Rose Bowl dreams.
