Williams Hall located on Michigan State University's campus in East Lansing, Michigan on May 26, 2025. The building is named for the wife of MSU's first president, Sarah Williams.

On-campus Michigan State University students will receive $25 in Spartan Cash as compensation for the power outage, according to a campuswide email sent Friday.

The Spartan Cash is a "gesture of thanks" for students' patience during the restoration process.

“We care about you and the impact that this unprecedented event had on your daily plans," the email read.

MSU first lost electricity and steam power on Sept. 19 after the T.B. Simon Power Plant experienced a central connection point failure that resulted in a campuswide power outage.  Students were left without hot water until electricity and steam power were fully restored to campus on Sept. 28.

Students can access the Spartan Cash through their meal plan account. Spartan Cash can be used throughout campus and East Lansing.

If the money does not appear, students are encouraged to contact MSU Live On by Wednesday, Oct. 7.
