Michigan State hockey has added forward Diego Johnson to its roster to replace former commit Nikita Klepov, according to Nathaniel Bott.
Johnson, an undrafted forward who will turn 20 in September, enters the NCAA after several seasons of junior hockey. The right-shot forward posted 46 points (25g-21a) in 68 regular-season games for the Penticton Vees of the Western Hockey League, finishing with a +25 on-ice rating.
He planned to return to the WHL this year, which the Vees announced on July 14. Johnson was committed to the University of Connecticut for the 2027-28 season. MSU beat UConn 2-1 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season.
Johnson was previously a teammate of sophomore wing Ryker Lee on the USHL's Madison Capitols. The two played together during the 2024-25 season, setting the franchise record for wins at home. Lee was awarded USHL Rookie of the Year.
A spot for Johnson opened up after Klepov signed an entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks, forfeiting his NCAA eligibility. Klepov is ineligible for the AHL due to age restrictions. As an 18-year-old, Klepov must return to the Canadian Hockey League if he does not make the Ducks roster.
Johnson’s addition brings the Spartans' roster back to 26 players, including 17 draft picks and nine first-round selections. He will be the eighth player on the team to arrive from the CHL. MSU had three former CHL players last season.
