It’s been one day since Michigan State hockey announced its roster and the team has already seen a departure.
Right wing Nikita Klepov, who would have been an incoming freshman, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks earlier today, per the franchise.
Klepov has forfeited his eligibility by signing the professional contract, bringing MSU’s roster down to 25 players (14 forwards) for the time being. It also brings the team down to 17 draft picks with nine first rounders as Klepov was the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.
The 18-year-old led the Ontario Hockey League in points (37g-60a-97p) as a rookie last season and was expected to bolster the Spartan offense with his playmaking abilities.
Ducks General Manager Pat Verbeek told the media Klepov “might have a chance to fast-track to the NHL,” following the Draft. The Ducks executed a trade to select Klepov.
Klepov’s decision to forgo his eligibility in late July is a rare occurrence, especially for an incoming freshman. The top-five NHL Draft picks are typically the only players who sign immediate ELCs.
MSU has lost committed players to the NHL before, most recently when Tyson Jugnauth signed with the Seattle Kraken in May 2025. The team has also lost potential returning players in July, most notably when former forward Ike Howard signed with Edmonton on July 8, 2025.
