Following its historic season, MSU men’s tennis has already lost key parts of its success.
Head coach Harry Jadun stepped down to pursue other options, and Matthew Forbes, the top eligible player to return, has transferred to Ohio State.
Forbes’ return to MSU would have strengthened the roster after losing senior powerhouses Ozan Baris and Aristotelis Thanos. His departure follows the promotion of Mike Flowers to head coach, who previously served as assistant coach.
Forbes is eligible for two seasons at OSU. The Buckeyes held the No. 1 spot in the nation for much of the season, and MSU fought to upset them twice in the 2025-26 season. The Spartans handed OSU its only loss at home this season.
At MSU, Forbes played in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions throughout the season. He helped MSU win the Big Ten regular season and its first Big Ten Tournament since 1967 — clinching the 4-3 tournament win with a three-set singles victory against OSU.
Forbes posted several win streaks at MSU, was the first-ever Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the Spartans and was named to the 2026 All-Big Ten First Team as a sophomore.
OSU head coach Ty Tucker said he recruited Forbes out of high school and is excited to start working with him.
"I'm super excited to have the opportunity to play for a national championship with Ohio State," said Forbes in a press release on May 9. "They have a great reputation when it comes to producing pros as well as having a great team culture. I'm pumped to get to work with the Buckeyes."
The Buckeyes are still competing in the NCAA Tournament, having advanced to the quarterfinal round.
